Here's to you Mr. Internet Forum Lurking Guy!

Those who divulge secret stashes shold be dragged out into the street and shot like the dog they are.

Unless they're telling me, in which case they should be dragged into the bar and bought a shot.

Even if you did post the location of a stash skier's who just go to that area now wnd then would probably have a hard time finding it anyway. The locals already know.

I show people stashes whenever they ax. I'm nice like dat. It's funny how some people are generous with other aspects of their life, but are not with "secret stashs". Like it's going to make a big difference in their ski experience if they give up the goods to somebody else looking to have fun. Any time I have shown the goods to people for the first time, I enjoyed it just as much as they did just seeing the big grin on their face.

I'm wonderful. Why can't my wife see that?

Last March I caught a "powder dump" (what passes for one in the east anyway) at Hunter Mountain. Without repeating the trip posting, the snow was as close to "real" powder (as in Utah) as I have experienced here in the east in March. After a couple of solo runs, and a couple of casual chairlift "pickups" I made a couple of runs with a "local." I guess he felt comfortable with me after those runs, and invited me to follow him to a couple of "secret" stashes. One involved a hole in a fence and another involved ducking in behind some trees. Both led to some short (this is after all Hunter) but delightful nearly vertical drops that let us float down through the powder with great joy. It lasted about three runs before we basically trashed it. I thanked him for sharing and then skied with him until we both quit. That is as specific as I will get here.

Thanks for the non-specificity...
That was an awesome day... Too bad the base wasnt deep enough for some slackcountry turns...

I use to cut around the fence on the Cliff. Short but fun. That's no big giveaway as tracks are easy to see.

So here is a question: liability aside, if someone annoying, rude, obnoxious, or whatever approached you about advice to get to a stash, let's call this person or persons, BS or SN, would you intentionally mislead them?

"Go down the trail, take a right at the snowmaking hydrant and into the woods...skiing down until you hit a large boulder than go left..."

I would probably just not tell them where it is.

If I do bring someone into a stash I always take first tracks. I may be a nice guy but I'm not that nice.

Which reminds me I did bring the Meatheads to some BC stuff last year at Smuggs, that was really cool.

I would have to mislead them, since I don't know any secrets... ;)

If I did know something then yes, I would mislead them... :D

cheers. i have experienced this as well, always fun to share in person.

there really isn't a liability issue here. telling someone the location of a shot through the woods does not make you criminally or civily liable if someone takes it upon themselves to do it. that said, i would never directly mislead someone. if someone was riding up a lift with me and asking, if i was heading that way and thought them up to task, i would show them something. if not, i wouldn't say anything.

I say you don't tell and you only show if you like the person. Last year there was one skier who joined our little group of tree rats just to learn where the stashes were. I am a follower not a leader so I leave it up to others to decide where to go. I did notice that the leaders where not going to the good spots but rather stuck to well known stashes. I later questioned them on this and they said it was because that other skier was in our midst and they did not want to reveal the good stuff to him.

Eh, if I knew of any, I'd probably tell about them for the asking. If no one asks, I assume they don't want to know.

:dunce:

I do the same things with some of the hostels I stay at though. Some aren't well known and I'd kinda like it to stay that way. As long as they stay in business... which is easy for a hostel to do... not much overhead.

the general stash rule i go by is that i am almost always willing to show someone in person but will never tell someone (either in person or online, especially online in which everyone and their brother has access to the info). one important reason to show someone in person, is you can feel out their skiing ability and ensure you aren't getting someone in over there head. also, you ensure someone has the skill to not sideslipe a ton of snow off a narrow chute that can barely handle a dozen skiers, let alone one guy who can't hack it. folks going into stashes and backcountry want fresh snow, but they also do not want to do it alone. sharing 'secrets' is fun, it's a you show me yours and i show you mine aspect in which you earned a run by finding it and trade it like a baseball card to someone else that earned theirs. it's a people thing, you dish the goods to people you know will treat the place right and who you can enjoy some turns with. that isn't possible with internet disclosure.

bingo... you nailed it riverc0il.

Tin Woodsman, I salute you for your attempts at reasoning with ATskier but you have to understand he's not going to ever agree with you. 2 replies with him would have been enough to realize that he's either busting your balls or trolling. i think a little of both actually. this is a common tactic of many folls i know... (I have a funny feeling I know who that guy is, his style sounds very familiar) so don't let yourself get sucked into a time-wasting game with posters like that. ;)
