It only takes one time to someone one knows well and then one probably starts locking them up.

woa, too many "one's" in there.

We've had skis locked up before and they've STILL been stolen. those ski lock cables aren't very thick. Plus we've had gear in the lodge taken, etc, not just skis

I don't know if its bad luck or it was just one person who followed us around taking everything we owned.:???: That was when I was growing up though, haven't had anything stolen from me in quite a few years

If you read the whole post though, you would have seen what else I wrote. Its never been the same scenario twice

BADDDDDDDD IDEA.......

There was one time when my mom and dad were skiing, and i was with them, there lock was broken, so they split the ski's. We came back from the lodge, and one pair of the split ski's was gone!!! I guess someone took them in such a hurry that they didn't notice that the skis didn't match. So instead of one of my parents not being able to ski, both couldn't........

O yea, the reason we locked our ski's in the first place? Cuz they had been stolen before

75% of the time I lock them up. Its not gonna keep a true thief from taking them, but will keep the opportunistic person honest.

Retractable ski locks are a joke. (I do use one, so I can pocket it;-)) We have had people bring back rentals to our shop that have been locked to each other(not the rack:smash:) and they cant remember their combo. They look at us like o well so we grab a small set of snips and cut it easily.

If I go in the lodge for an extended period, then yes I lock up my skis. Doesn't take much work, yes lock may be easy to pick, but it's a simple deterent

You're assuming I'm matching them up with someone else. I leave them single and like I said it's a last resort.

Didn't want to say "you" because then it would seem I was directing the post at you, where it was meant to generic.

Wow, sorry to hear. :-( Clippers will easily get through the cable I use. My take is that if my skis are locked and the pair next to mine are not, why bother taking mine? Also, to the extent that sometimes it might be an accident (someone with the same skis), if mine are locked, they won't be taken (I just thought of this now though--so I can't say I've locked my skis for that reason). Also, how many ski thieves carry clippers?

I seperate them...haven't lost a pair...or a single ski for that matter...yet. Most retractable locks are as easy to cut through as your ticket wicket...won't stop a determined theif.

Ah I see, bright idea.

What I do now, In addition to locking them up, I find someone who has ski's much better than mine and place mine next to his. That way, if the thief is determined, hopefully he'll just take that guys skis :???:

Are we talking a planed ski thief or a opportunistic one? If someone is planning on stealing skis then most likely they would, its a tool of the trade.;-) A average person wont be carrying one though for the most part.

I've never had equipment stolen. I'm not particularly careful about where I put my skis, I don't lock them or separate them either. Probably just lucky.

A determined thief will steal your skis if they want to. Forget about at the ski area, I've seen night club parking lots filled with cars that have skis locked up in ski racks. Thieves love that...their marks are all inside drinking and partying. A few clips with a bolt cutter and the skis are gone along with the racks. I remember a night when 2 dozen cars were hit in one parking lot.

Well true. It's an obvious tool to have if one is a planned thief. I guess the better question is how many ski thefts are by planned thieves and how many be opportunistic ones? Maybe we should do a survey of the ski thieves ;-)

By opportunistic do you mean someone who sees your skis and likes them so they just decide it's time to steal them?

You know, I'm less likely to pummel someone who plans to steal skis and has a bolt cutter than some punk who happens to like the graphics and decides on the spot to just take the skis. Or, someone who has had their skis stolen so they tit for tat and steal yours so they can ski.

My punishment for those types would be a chairlift ride to the summit while dangling head down by one leg with the person whose skis were stolen riding the lift and holding the rope keeping the thief from falling.

And if the knot comes untied, oh well.

Back in college I was skiing with a bunch of guys at Sugarloaf. We went in at the end of the day to change and when we came out one pair of skis was missing. The guy who was missing his skis ran down to the parking lot and started checking the roof racks on cars leaving and actually spotted them. He starts knocking on the window and the guys inside are ignoring him. They are stuck in a line of cars and can't get out. So he starts pounding on the window until it breaks and then rips his skis off out of the rack and walks away! The guys were scared shitless and probably didn't want to get arrested, so they just drove off. They probably never stole again.

My uncle had his skis and his buddies skistole off the car while at a bar. This wasnt even a "ski bar" It was all the way back home.

Seperating skis is one of the biggest gaper moves ever..the thieves are there watching you seperate your shit..lol Spend 15 bucks and buy a lock

Ha hahaha. I stopped locking my skis 'cause I thought separating them was enough. I never once thought how a thief was probably watching me do it. Too funny. I guess I'm just lucky. And having a pair of 1998 Rossis 9Ss helps, too.

Also, for some reason I can't explain, I'll always lock rental skis, but not my own. Paying some shop for their crappy stolen rental skis seems worse than having to buy a new pair for myself.

:smile:I bring a grill, burgers, dogs and beer and make my own lodge next to my truck.

As do I. If I'm traveling to a different area, I like to roll like a king. A king with his own ketchup, hot sauce, BBQ, Grill, Beer, one of those giant cookies, some chips, salsa, salad.... I can't wait for winter tail gating.

I always lock skis for several reasons: 1) I always going with at least two pairs of skis where second pair locked at the base lodge with 1/4'' cable... thieves will need more than clippers for the cable 2) for peace of mind that I don't have to worry about my skis "walking away" on me 3) I don't have to walk in ski boots to my car to exchange skis during the day 4) not as much for my skis current value or money paid when I bought them but for REPLACEMENT VOLUE

Ouch, GrilledCheeze just called me a gaper...he must be really core. I've got $8 wire cutters that'll go through that $15 Kraptonite retractable lock in one snip...and both of your skis and poles are right there for the taking...in much less time than it would take for you to gather up both of my skis. Kinda like going to a convenience store.

So seperating skis is a better method than locking them up..:flame::spin:
