Do you wear a helmet?

Haven't had a helmet thread/debate/flame war in a while. ;) It seems to me that there are far more helmet wearers now than in years past. I started wearing one during the 2004-05 season and it's now a standard part of my equipment, even in the spring. I would probably feel weird without it, kinda like not wearing a seat belt. I now have a Giro G10 and it fits perfectly.

I decided to start wearing one after noticing more and more people started wearing them. I also wanted to set a good example for my kids so I figured I'd get used to it well before they even started skiing. It literally took me 3 runs to get accustomed to it. I don't expect it to help in all instances, but it's better than nothing. It doesn't impact how I ski in terms of making me more aggressive, but I suppose it's contributed to feeling at least a bit more comfortable in the trees.

You?

Yes I wear one too and I also started using it with the 2004/2005 season. I figured I wear a helmet while road and mountain biking about 20MPH+ so why shouldn't we while skiing faster? I wouldn't think of skiing without it now plus it's warmer and you don't have to wear an ugly hat.

always...started wearing one in 98 and haven't skied a day without one since. As Greg said, its like wearing a seatbelt. Comes in handy in the woods...no more throwing the hands up to blocks the branches, just duck your head and blast through.

I wear a Giro Fuse...I've been wearing a helmet for the past two seasons...When I ski at Jackson Hole and Stowe..it seems like less people wear helmets than here in PA...I'm surprised they're not mandatory by now..

I always wear a helmet (Giro Nine.9) and would definitely feel weird without it. I've been wearing one for about 6 seasons now. It also keeps me warmer than a hat would and protects from all those little branches that seem to hit me.

I agree that it seems like far more people wear helmets now than a few years ago.

I've used a helmet since 01-02.

A helmet is great in the trees; can't imagine skiing in trees without one now.

I wear it in the lodge because it protects me from the gapers who bring ski gear inside and swing it all over the place; I have more scratches on my helmet from getting hit with skis in the lodge than from skiing trees.

No, I don't wear it while I eat lunch.

I won't go BC or to places like Tucks without my helmet.

Warmer and more comfortable than a hat...no itching.

My only complaint with my first helmet was that it was too warm but my Giro G10 has tons of vents and this is no longer an issue.

I've subscribed to use of a brain-bucket since '98. Currently use (and like a lot) Carrera Airborne-best venting I've ever encountered.

Yup, started in 2005. Have worn bike helmet for years but didn't think I needed it for skiing. Finally realized it wasn't only about how I ski, it's everybody else too! Got the Giro 9 ...having option of tunes helped me decide, then realized it was a bit of an idiot move! Now I wear my helmet always and play tunes quietly sometimes.

Avoided a helmet because I thought my head would be too hot ...it's not at all and an added bonus came while skiing in the rain...helmet and goggles was a lot like driving in the car! Anyone know if they make automatic wipers for goggles?!

Was glad I had helmet that first year...got clocked by a teenage racer speeding through the bridge at Attitash. She went down and crashed in the snow fence, I'm a bit like running into a wall...she could have killed the kids who were also on the bridge. Yes, don't worry, the racer got up and skied away without a word too!

I started wearing a helmet (Giro Nine.9) early last season after my barber asked me if I wear a helmet when I ski. I told him I didn't and he told me a story of how he would have cracked his head on some rocks without it, but instead cracked the helmet. I got one after that and can't imagine skiing without one now.

Yup, been wearing one just about every time I ski since about 1994 or 1995. I've had a significant concussion from a skier-tree incident as well as a minor concussion the following year from an unexpected bumpfield incident (while skiing Super-G turns; bumps at 50MPH just aren't my thing). It was the latter incident--where I was able to ski away, once all my gear made it back to me--that convinced me to wear one more often. Once I got used to it, I'd find myself freezing if I wasn't wearing it, even when it was relatively warm out. At this point, I've got a Pro-Tec Mercenary that's my everyday helmet and a Briko CK that I wear for beer league.

Well, a court in Germany has found replacing your skull with a plastic covering is better than the original....I sense a business opportunity here. Forget wearing helmets. Try skull replacement!

On a related note, can you imagine what this dude would have gotten in an American court?

Man loses top of his head in brain operation
Wed Aug 29, 2007 9:07 AM ET

BERLIN (Reuters) - A German court has awarded 3,000 euros ($4,100) in damages to a man who had to have the top of his skull replaced with plastic because of a faulty hospital fridge.

Doctors removed the top of the man's head and put it in cold storage while they operated on his brain, the court in the western city of Koblenz said Tuesday.

Because the refrigerator was defective, the section of skull was not kept cool enough and could not be reattached. Doctors replaced the bone with a plastic prosthesis.

The man sought compensation of at least 20,000 euros on the grounds that the prosthesis caused him headaches, affected his balance and made him unduly sensitivity to the weather.

Following consultations with experts, the court found that the operation had caused the man's discomfort, not the loss of the top of his skull.

Compensation of 3,000 euros was "appropriate and sufficient," it said.

"The experts consulted by the court concluded the new skull roof was better than the original," a court spokesman said.
