I used to ski with a flask of schnapps in me pocket all the time. And, when I was a ski bum in Tahoe my buddies and I used to stash beers on the hill in the morning and stop for a mid afternoon on mountain beer break. These days I wait until apres ski to quaff.

A beer or 2 during the day at a mountain bar is common. Occasionally I will split a 6 pack with a friend at the top of the mountain or in the woods. That is about it though, nothing excessive.

Most of the time I wait till after skiing to have a few but not always.Spring time tailgate party's with a few beers & a good BBQ can be a blast. For some reason I always like to stop for a few in the Octagon at the top of Stowe towards the end of the day when I'm there. I have a few ski buddies that always carry a flask (or 2-3) of scotch with them & I've been known to take a few nips on the chair when skiing with them. But like I said most of the time I don't drink while skiing. Afterwards is a whole other story.

I always carry a flask of single malt scotch in my ski pack. Current contents are a Glenmorangie 12-year old. I'll take a nip every now and then. When I do a backcountry tour, I bring out the flask when I get back to my car, pour out a shot on the ground for the snow gods to thank them for getting me back down safely then take a healthy swig. It's one of my ski traditions.

I dont really see the point. To just have a beer or 2 with lunch wouldnt give me a buzz, but would increase the desire to pee, which is annoying when you're out on the mountain And as others have noted, drunk skiing is dangerous.

And is it just me, or has this behavior decreased over the years? Growing up as a wee-lad skiing in the Poconos, it wasn't uncommon to see numerous people drinking beer cans ON the lift. I dont really see that anymore. Then again, maybe it's because it was at night.

I drink and ski. Not enough to get buzzed or drunk, but enough to warm the belly and ease tension on the muscles.

I find that a couple beers actually makes me a better skiier. Sometimes on cold days I will keep a flask of vodka in the backpack.

Never get drunk and ski ... that's super dangerous and irresponsible for yourself and others. But if you know your limits I think a couple beverages and skiing go hand in hand.

I don't smoke pot and ski... because I know that makes me a worse skiier I just get nervous and sloppy.

I don't take psychedelic drugs and ski either!

Glad you save the drinking until you get behind the wheel! :p

I'll do a beer at lunch sometimes. Usually save them for after though.

Typically the acid and cocaine i'm poppin every morning are too strong to be counteracted by a couple of beers so to keep the smooth flying buzz happening all day I just mainline an IV of some fresh vodka from my camelback.

Helps me stay steezy all day long.

Cocaine and LSD don't mix very well.. but I like how you are well prepared for this fact

Never get to crazy these days. A few beers possibly but usually once I'm drinking my boots have come off as well.

I enjoy the "add a shot" choices for hot chocolate at the Schwendi Hut at the top of Waterville's main quad. Makes a warm up run all that more enjoyable.

I keep a flask of Jager or Jameson on me and take a swig from time to time on the lift, and I'll usually have a beer or two at lunch. Like others said, it keeps me loose and helps me to not wuss out on stuff I know I can do. I hate when my inhibitions get the better of me and I start going off jumps too slow. Coming up short is so much worse than going a little too fast.

One time last season, a friend and I had like 2 beers and 3 shots each at lunch. Mostly because we were flirting with the hot bartender. However when we got back out there, we did one run and decided to call it quits. My reaction times were way off and it got scary real quick.

"Other habits" are a different story. Safety meetings never really effect the way I ride. But then again, I've been at it for a long time and I'm used to functioning when being "safe".

Dislocated shoulder @ Jiminy Peak about three weeks ago...

I was going really fast and decided to pull a 360 off this berm at the edge of the trail. I was going way to fast and thought I was going to get more air than I did so basically it was a sloppy attempt and just asking to get hurt.

When I landed I wasn't fully rotated and going way to fast to correct my sloppy landing. My front tip dug right in and flipped me over onto my left shoulder.

I knew right away this was gonna be bad news but I shook my shoulder around, got up, and it didn't hurt that bad at first.

Woke up the next day and realized the damage I had done. Spent the next 4 days in extreme pain unable to sleep and then looked up online about dislocated shoulders and how to pop them back in yourself. So apparently I did this, because when I went to the E.R. at Cooley Dickonson hospital later that night (because it still hurt so bad and I was worried I had damaged a nerve or possible artery... at points my whole arm had went numb)...

Anyway at the hospital they said I had popped it back in myself, but that I had messed up my rotator cuff and should lay off it for a while. They gave me a bunch of Percocet and a brace.

I felt it was pretty much healed by the next weekend and went skiing anyway and as of now I've skiied two days since then and it still hurts a little if I move it the wrong way but it's definitely mostly mended.

Any connection?

I like to have a beer at lunch- if I have lunch.
In the past we've stashed a 6 pack in the snow in the woods to nurse all day. This works out alright and keeps some carbs in you.

More recently I've been ripping a quick shot from the bottle before booting up at the car in the morning to help calm the nerves after a hairy, snowy ride to the mountain. Or just to help me loosen up for that first run.

I went drunk skiing last year, that wasn't the best idea ever.
Buzzed skiing and hanging out with your buddies on the groomers is a good time. Especially if they're not all that strong of skiers and you're out there to hang out with them.

One of my favorite encounters is when some guy looks at you funny when you crack a beer on the lift at 10 or 11am. I return the look with a perplexed one of my own and say, "What? Its lunch time for me, I've been up since 4:30am!" Don't judge me!
