And is it just me, or has this behavior decreased over the years? Growing up as a wee-lad skiing in the Poconos, it wasn't uncommon to see numerous people drinking beer cans ON the lift. I dont really see that anymore. Then again, maybe it's because it was at night.

Not sure the stats back it up, but of course, I wonder how close of tabs they kept back in the 50's, 60's and 70's for that matter, either way, I think everything in regards to drinking while doing anything have been somewhat curtailed. I mean the stories my father would tell would get you a lifetime loss of liscense and jail time. When he was younger in small town Maine, get nailed drinking, get a ride home in the cruiser and the cop keeps your beer. Heck look at Killington, BMMC (Geoff speak up) has been completely whiped out because of two factors, two much drinking/DUI's and the worry of getting sued for creating such an environment.

I will have a couple at lunch, but more times then not I wait til the end of the day. I hate having to take a piss all becuase I wanted a couple brews. Also 50% of the time I will have a couple beers and call it quits.

I don't drink while skiing....

I drink on the lift.

I have always wanted to play that drinking game like in Out Cold. Start at the top with a full pint and whoever has the most still in their cup at the bottom wins. What do you win? Another beer!

If there's something good on tap than an obligatory pint is a definite!

sometimes a small beer at lunch, usually makes me want to pee so I wait till skiing is over then have a few

A small beer - are we talking like a Miller nip? Come to think of it- do they still make them?

I don't see how having to pee is such a big detractor from having a beer at lunch, unless you're a girl. Find a tree and let er rip, takes a few seconds out of your day...

+1

Although, you have to be careful, if it's super cold you could end up peeing on your nuts. :-o

Heck look at Killington, BMMC (Geoff speak up) has been completely whiped out because of two factors, two much drinking/DUI's and the worry of getting sued for creating such an environment.

My opinion:

Bear Mountain Mogul Challenge was created for two reasons:
* To promote Killington (and Outer Limits) as the epicenter of eastern mogul skiing
* To promote spring skiing at Killington. April and May are continuous parties and you should put off your spring yardwork until after the June 1 slalom.

POWDR is a western owner with a western mentality. In Park City, the destination skiers stop flying in on March 31st and the place is a ghost town. They don't understand eastern drive-to skiing as a business. Under POWDR, there is no interest in operating much beyond mid-April and they shrink down to one lift as quickly as possible. Bear now slams shut after the first weekend of April. There is no point in promoting spring skiing or Bear Mountain as the place where you'd want to go to see superb spring bumps. There is no point spending money to promote a product that no longer exists.

POWDR concocted a story that the Vermont liquor commission told them they couldn't have public drinking at an event. This turned out to be a complete lie. Among other things, Vermont does not have an open container law and allows drinking on state land. The snow at the bottom of Outer Limits is in the Calvin Coolidge State Forest.

The only issue the state liquor commission had is that people comply with Vermont liquor laws.
These are:
* No kegs (they have all kinds of funky law about kegs)
* No minors (duh)
* You can only drink your own alcohol. You can't give it away. You can't sell it.

The Vermont State Police used to use BMMC as a big DUI revenue generator. They had road blocks on East Mountain Road. More recently, the State Police invaded the town for moe. concerts held at Bear (with plenty of public drinking and pot smoking). Last year, I counted 6 state police cars in town for no reason other than to score easy DUI and drug busts.

Vermont law limits liability for ski resorts. Unless it's lift-related, you're not going to be able to sue them with much luck. Vermont had a liability limitation law from the Stratton case in the 1970's that was overturned in a Killington case in 1994 (Dalury v. S-K-I Ltd.) so it was rewritten. All the ski resorts in the state were uninsurable after that court ruling so the law changed to something that made the insurance companies happy. As far as I know, nobody has won a liability suit since.

We do bring the Bota bag on ocassion filled with a nice red wine...find some quiet spot off trail in the woods, use the back of the skis as a back rest, sit in the snow and enjoy..
