Yeah, he's great. I figured no body would want to ski with him in the stupid poll just from is "Veteran's deserve no respect" comments. But hey, I guess most people here would rather ski with someone who spits on veteran's rather than with someone who's going to point out the sheave train on tower 14 is slightly out of allignment and should be looked at. Interesting bunch you are!

I never spit on veterans..I just mentioned that OldSnowboardMaines comment about not being able to snowboard at MRG and feeling he should because he was a veteran seemed like a dumb comparison..:flag::flag::flag:

More people wanting to ski with me over you is a no brainer...I'm mad steezy and you're mad frosty and you're gonna melt...you know like Frosty the snowman..

On Topic:

I also fear showing up at the ski area and forgetting my ski boots...it's never happened before..

Sadly, I've had that happen before. We were up at Stowe. My wife wasn't skiing because she was pregnant, so she dropped me off in the morning and went to do some sight seeing. Unfortunately I forgot my boots in the car and didn't realize until she was long gone. I couldn't get her on the cell so I ended up having to rent boots...

Snowboarding in the Catskills there tends to be a good amount of ice on some of the runs. My fear somewhat falls on OldsnowboarderME states by getting hit behind... my has to do with that, but gets my knees taken out while straight lining a portion of a run that has ice on it and then based on where the connection is can throw up into a tree... not fun.... nor something I try to think about when snowboarding... if I do, I'll never have fun.

...but on a more serious note, yes, aging is the great fear. I don't necessarily mind the idea of slowing down and not being able to ski to the same ability. I know right now, I'm no where near the skier I was when I was 19. Some of that has to do with fitness, most of it has to do with a greater concern for hurting myself that might affect my 'adult' responsibilities.

So....I don't mind that I no longer feel the need to huck myself in the park or drop 25 footers. As long as I have the ability to get out there and challenge myself, I'll always be happy.

You know what scares me? Canies!

OK, not to a ski area, but to Pinkham. Fortunately, Wildcat was still open, so I had to reant boots AND skis, due to the binding system they used. The Sluice on rental skis was "interesting"

Getting old and falling apart is really not my bag, baby. My shoulders, knee problems, etc. and I haven't even hit the half century mark yet.

Old Age - This is probably more of a worry then a fear, but at 53, no matter how much I work out (and I do a lot), I can’t stop the aging process. So some day the aging process won’t allow me to ski at the level I do now. I wonder if I’ll still want to ski if I can’t go all out. That scares me and I usually try not to think about it.

You need more personal acceptance in your life.

Everyone gets old. Look at it this way...if your age starts to diminish your skiing skills, you can still go all out but you have to accept a lesser personal standard. Be nice to yourself.

And I hate to say it, but you never stopped the aging process. You postponed the effects. So keep working out, I sure do.

The worst thing to do when you age is become inactive. Accept whatever activity level you can push yourself to and keep it up.

Or you start to die.

I don't want to become creaky and decrepit when I age either. But I accept it and work to stay fit. I've even accepted that by the time I'm 80 or so that I'll actually look forward to death. I've found that the most well adjusted elderly folks accept death easily and they live each day to the fullest. That's life!

Because I sell tombstones for a living, I don't fear death so much because it's reality...Death is a part of life. One thing that people should do as they get older if they have the money is to Gift their children money on a yearly basis. You can gift somebody up to $12,000 tax free annually..that way older folks can see their children/grandchildren enjoying the money and uncle Sam doesn't get as much in inheritance taxes...

I fear going to the Dentist...My last visit I had three cavities and it was the first time I ever had any cavities and the dentist also told me I grind my teeth so now I sleep with a mouthguard to preserve my teeth from future damage...I also fear going to the family Dr. and don't go as often as I should..I'm not comfortable being naked in front of him and don't like being weighed and poked and what not...

Blowing a knee out is always in the back of my mind. I guess that's a fear i've learned to live with.

I also fear the easter bunny, clowns and all things made with spinach.

Now to be on topic ..what do I fear? .. a high speed skier hitting me from behind.

That's happened to me twice, so I don't fear it that much anymore. Both times I was standing in the open on a really wide groomer with nobody for miles around, so it was the last thing I figured would happen. You're just sort of standing there one minute, and 1/2 a second later you're 100 feet down the hill with no equipment. Where you're attached to your snowboard, the outcome would be a little different....

I fear a bad fall on steep terrain resulting from a lack of fitness. In other words, I am not as physically fit, nor do I ski as many days as I did during college/grad school, and I fear getting into a situation where I have the ability to ski a piece of terrain, or make the turn I want, i.e. my brain knows exactly what actions to tell my body to make and at what time...but then my body cannot make them because I am not in good enough shape, i.e. stamina + strength are lacking.

Solution: ski less steeps, more bumps! Has worked great so far.

I also fear falling from a lift of substantial height; I have always been a "bar down" guy, but seeing this last March cemented it:

Koreshot and Phil.

Now we're talking. I shall have my payback soon - maybe a friendly shove down the Face Chutes at Jay... we'll see.

More on topic though, one of my bigger fears (aside from being stuck on the lift with Marc and having to listen to a lecture about the tension properties of his bicycle wheel spoke braded with siberian cat hair) is standing on top of a convex slope out of bounds.

That feeling of I can see the next 20 feet but I have no clue what comes after. It is a strange one I know, but when skiing, seeing and assessing = control, and starting a run down something I can't see makes me feel completely out of control. If that makes sense...

I saw that shot in the gallery and was like whoa. My first thought was the friggin' lift operator was asleep at the kill switch, but then got to thinking how most detachable stations block your view of the chairs on the line, and how things spiral out of control a lot faster with the extra line speed. I'd never really thought about that before. On a fixed grip quad, the operator can generally see you until you get your safety bar down, and a good opeartor has a sixth sense about who to watch and will hit the kill dropping someone in that situation only a few feet into the soft snow way before the first tower. That picture does tell a million words if you analize it and should really be a catalyst for a design change or safety features on detachables. I wonder how many times that same situation has played itself out?? Knowing how many times I've actually seen it play out to a happy ending on fixed grips, it scares me to think of how many times it's played itself out to a tragic one on high speeds.

See this thread for more info about the incident surrounding the above picture. I believe it was also talked about in an issue of SAM last season.

I don't remember the outcome, does anyone know if the person who fell ended up being alright?

The person who posted the picture stated that they didn't know about the outcome in galleries. They DID fall. From that height, it couldn't have been good.

I could have sworn someone had it on video someplace.

I don't know why I can picture it, I don't recall exactly where.
