Just read the afternoon snow report for Okemo, and they say they expect to fire up the snowguns again, if now tonight then tomorrow night for sure! Maybe the season's not over yet!!!

Wawa will restart snowmaking tonight. They're a wreck right now. No snow at the base, you have to walk in between the lifts. Sundowner, all of the Vickery Bowl, and parts of Lower Hitchcock are closed. The upper mountain is still pretty well covered. There's a big puddle at the bottom of Challenger. Damn March...

Burke is done.

I doubt that Sunapee or Cannon will blow anymore. Most places are done...the ski vacation weeks are over.

Andyzee is right: places like K-mart and Oscreamo will blow snow to prolong their season because they have the demand to justify it.

Sugarloaf goes on line this afternoon.

After further review they have moved back turning on the guns to tomorrow afternoon. Looks like temps are cold enough right know. Not sure if they just did not change that part of the report from yesterday.

Hunter stopped last week... But there so much snow up there I'm not really concerned about it...

Bellayre usually makes snow to last one weekend past Hunter.. Closing day at Bellayre is a blast!

Belleayre is like the Okemo of the Catskills, they take very good care of their snow surfaces. It's not much of a mountain compared to Hunter, but they regularly have good snow conditions.

I skied there on closing day weekend in 2004, and it was in the mid 70's and the snow was melting really fast, but the skiing was still really good.

I think we will either be at Belleayre this weekend or perhaps Plattekill if they get buried this week.

I always though Windham was the Okemo of the Skillz...

I'm more of a difficult terrain over good grooming guy... But I'm down with Bellayre and what they're trying to do... Plus Tony is a cool guy...

As far as the Catskills, I've always thought of Windham as the Okemo or Stratton equivalent. I'm not sure what I would equate Belleayre to.

I guess k-mart (killington) just has to try to be open into May, and Okemo just wants to be like K-mart. Killington was advertising that they would be doing major snowmaking operations by "resurfacing terrain, and opening as much as possible" over the weekend.

Where does killington get all this money for snowmaking? Sugarbush blew their budget by late febuary, spending a reported $30,000 per day on snowmaking, and making it longer then they usualy do. They never even blew the superpipe, probably insted spending the money on polishing off the mountain.

I guess killington probably held off with some late winter snowmaking, or they view it as a marketing expense to stay open as long as possible.

I wonder how many resorts that are advertising snowmaking now, are acutaly unleasing the guns on any signifigant terrain, or just turning on a gun here and there to polish off the thin spots.

This is the most likely scenario. No resort is going to try to open or re-open new terrain. And not much snow will be blown, just some to cover bare patches in key areas.

Alot of resorts will simply farm the remaining snow, pushing snow from closed trails onto areas that need it to stay open.

Most of the snowmaking talk is just marketing hype to keep folks interested in skiing. The hardcores will be out there skiing no matter what...the rest of the crowd is already thinking about golf.

Nothing would please this skier more than to watch a bunch of golfers flee from the golf course in the face of a full blown blizzard.

And that goes double for every winter-hater who feels it's necessary to come in my office to boast about all the lovely warm weather we've had.

I'm always looking at the marketing side 1st.
The snowmaking going on line very near the beginning of pass sales... I think there is a bit of a correlation. I'm impressed if you make snow in March. Okemo, ASC, Wa Wa, are getting good press. Its a good thing and I'm happy no matter what the reason. I wish Loon was. No slam they made a ton of snow this year.

K-mart has a reputation of being open until May, so my guess its that and the convienient release of their season passes on Friday.

I guess that you are right, I have only been to Windham three times and hated all three times, so I do not have recent ski experiences there.

I like difficult terrain as well, but this year snowmaking and grooming come in handy. I'll have to wait until my son's skills improve more for some main mountain/west mountain skiing at Hunter. Hunter has some real fine advanced terrain, and excelent snowmaking. He actually likes Plattekill the best out of Hunter, Belleayre, and Catamount, which are the three NY ski areas he has been to.
