"With Mother Nature providing over 16 inches of snow in the last 7 days, heavy snow falling through the day Friday and great snowmaking weather, Gore is set for its best early season skiing and riding in years!

Gore Mountain anticipates opening up to 10 lifts and 53 trails Saturday December 17. Opening for the first time this season will be the High Peaks and Natural North sections of the mountain. Gore also plans to open many of its glades; backcountry, cross country and snowshoeing trails as weather and snow conditions permit.

In addition to the great all mountain skiing and riding, Freestyle skiers and riders will enjoy this weekend’s opening of the lift-serviced “Gully Terrain Park. This year’s new and improved terrain park design features tabletops, an A-frame rail, battleship rails, and more.

Saturday’s Big Air Contest on “The Arena at 1pm will offer both participants and spectators base area excitement! Those who enter will be judged on style, height, landing and overall performance. A new pair of skis and snowboard will be awarded to top competitors. Registration will take place Saturday 9am-12:30pm, and the entry fee is just $10 per person.

For a great holiday gift, The Gore /Whiteface 4 pack Snow Sampler is available through December 19, 2005. For just $199.00 you can purchase four (4) lift tickets valid at either mountain anytime until closing day in April, 2006. Frequent skier cards for Adults, Teens and Juniors are also available and will allow you to save money every time you come to the mountain. The Empire Card, Student Card and Junior Snow Ball Card are valid at Gore and Whiteface mountains." (this message was received via email from Gore)

Where ever you go, get out and enjoy this snow.

Here Here . . .

It's amazing that such a great mountain gets so little attention. I've debated the "Whiteface's little sister" take, but I guess I should just accept it and take comfort in the fact that there will be more goods for me.

And to answer the Question, Gore is in North Creek, NY.

Maybe things have changed but when I skied Gore every weekend there were lots of buses in the parking lot and the liftlines were huge.

Weekends can get crowded, but the mountain layout spreads out the crowds nicely. Certain lifts, particularly the gondola, can have a bit of a line. Just avoid those places and head for the HighPeaks area and the North Side during the peak hours.

Gore has some superb terrain. It is certainly underrated and offers a well rounded skiing experience. Can't wait to ski it tomorrow!!

Gore is very underrated. IMO there most underrated aspect is their tree, natural, and liftline skiing. When they can open all that they have some of the best terrain in the East. If you've never been there after a big dump you might think this is BS. Those of us who have been there know different.

Planned to open tomorrow:

Twister Glades, Tahawus Glades, Straightbrook Glades, Chatiemac Glades, Double Barrel, Otter Slide Glades, Dark Side Glades, Cave Glades, and Darby Woods.

I know where I'll be-- in the woods!

And Lower Steilhang (a favorite of mine)

BTW: looks like the trail count has been upped to 61.

That's crazy for almost any point in the year. I remember full seasons when Lower Steilhang never opened.

Lower Steilhang is new and improved this year as well from what I've heard. The second to last turn has been widened. If you're familiar with lower newton's, I believe that they took out a select group of trees linking the two. This will allow people to dart into the glade at the bottom much easier and avoid the pileup that occurs in that area(from people who apparantly paid no attention to the diamond upon entering the trail).

I was thinking of going to Whiteface tomorrow, but with all the glades open, I'm taking out the rock skis and heading to Gore. See everyone in the Cave.

I grew up skiing at Gore and never got to take much advantage of the glades. Part of it is that I have been there less in recent years when they've opened up a lot more. But also I never skied much with others who liked glades (mostly skied at Gore with family), so I never learned about the off-the-map options at Gore. Then there is also the problem with them often not having enough natural snow, but I figure most seasons there would've been some point where they might be skiable.

Nah, they didn't have the glades open for good reason. I jumped in for some untracked turns on Saturday morning only to find that I sunk right through 12 inches right to the ground. They need a warm/freeze cycle to solidify the base, then another snow on top of that. Then it will be set up perfectly. North Side and Dark Side were open briefly on Saturday under "natural snow conditions". Apparantly the plan was to pack down a base so they can start making snow on top.

The cruisers however, were sweet. Twister and Showcase were excellent. Unbelievable hero snow. Cruising up the triple, it seemed that everyone was carving trenches the whole way down.

Lies was in weird shape. Ungroomed, somewhat bumped up, but the weird thing was the randomness of the man-made snow piles. The headwall was steeper than I've seen rumor at times. Later in the trail, there was a crevasse (5-8 ft. deep) skier's left. It was kind of fun to ski, though. Crazy steep in places, but fun to pick out lines through.

So the glades aren't open? I was planning on going Friday 12/23 but it's not really worth the long 3.5 hr daytrip if the glades aren't open. I could have sworn that their snow report showed almost all the glades open last weekend - now they're listed as closed. It also looks like they lost a few trails. What's going on there????

I'm not interested in poaching as I'm on brand new skis and the bindings are broken on my rock skis.

They opened everything up in an effort to pack down some base. Now that the base is packed down, they've closed some trails awaiting the next storm.

That being said, they are really cranking on the snowmaking at Gore. The lower mountain is in pristine shape (except for Sleighride). North Side still needs snow, but that won't take too long, and I don't know if it's a priority. From what I've heard, their plan is to open Chatiemac, Hullabaloo, and Open Pit, then move on to Rumor. Continued good snowmaking temps means that they should get those three done this week and move the operation to Rumor in time to see some guns this weekend.

Apparantly Opening Rumor is a huge undertaking. Rumor takes as much man power, water, and pressure as Hawkeye, Chateimac, Lies and Open Pit combined.

This coming weekend is Christmas, and there haven't been many Christmases where almost the entire mountain was open.
