badass yes, but he also was blessed with the genetics necessary for what he does. No amount of training will help you climb that high unless you also have the genetics for it.

From what I've read... and Viesturs even says it in the documentary... one of the amazing things about Messner is that he didn't have any particularly outstanding physiological qualities. What he did have was climbing experience starting out at about 5 years old, and a mental self motivation and drive that very, very few people have.

But Viesters was the one (or maybe Krackauer) who said you need the genetics to be able to do that. Maybe I'm not remembering the exact qoute correctly

Well I won't argue that genetics had nothing to do with it; but there was, apparently nothing exceptional about his physiology...

fwiw, saying what messner did was thanks to his genetics really downplays his accomplishments.

Not sure thats what I said but if you interpreted it that way I apologize for the confusion.

My point is (and this is not original, quoted from Krakaurs book):

One cannot simply be in tip top physical shape and expect to be able to do something like what he did. There must also be an underlying genetic propensity for it as well. If you don't have the genetics no amount of conditioning or mind control will allow you to do it. Period.

Now his accomplishments are undoubtedly extraordinary, no argument there. Having the genetics doesn't imply its anything like easy by any means.

i dunno....proper conditioning, proper mental state, proper ambition, proper strength, proper will, proper smarts in the mountains....i'd think that's at least 99% of it. genetics probably plays some role in it, but i tend to attribute his accomplishments simply to what he did, and not what his ma and pa gave him, and not to some sci-fi superior-human theory.

thats cool - I don't pretend to be an expert on this, just echoing what I read in that book.

Again, no doubt the guy is badass!

Now when you say "proper mental state"... if by "proper" you really mean "bat shiat crazy," I'm inclined to agree.

/just kidding... a little bit anyway... Ed Viesturs seems WAY more down to Earth than Messner does... I wonder how much losing his little brother f'ed him up
