Date(s) Skied: 2/16/08

Resort or Ski Area: Gore Mountain, North Creek, NY

Conditions: COLD, 8 degrees morning to ~18+ by afternoon

Trip Report:

After a last minute decision, I opted to head out Saturday morning to Gore, solo, arriving around 9:15 and obtaining a ticket after a painful and cold 30 minute wait by quarter to ten.

The place was quite crowded so I geared up out in the cold and then headed inside for a quick warm up of my hands.

Then it was off to the ADK express as the line for the gondola was LARGE to say the least and the singles line at the express was empty:grin:

It was literally so cold that upon reaching the saddle lodge, I again ducked in for a hand warm up. Man I have crappy circulation! From there I was off to sleeping bear with nice conditions, mostly packed powder with a few scrapes. Back up to Tahawus, empty and smooth as silk. Back up this time I rode with Matt, I think, from the mountain staff and we chatted about conditions weather and mountain logistics. Nice to meet you Matt, hope you had a great day and hope I remembered your name right!

The successive runs got my circulation flowing and I shot over to the High Peaks Quad for a ride to the top.

From there I skied all over the top of the mountain repeatedly covering all the areas in pink:

After skipping lunch, I packed it in around 3:00 to head for home.
More photos of the top of the high peaks quad area in the gallery , it was just too cold to keep taking my hands out!

All in all a great day.

Almost went down ther this weekend but opted to stay here and ski my regular ski area @ Titus Mtn .

It was sunny 10 degrees , no wind to speak of , NO Lift lines warmed up to around 20 and $30

I'm happy we bagged our Ann Prez week trip to NH and Wawa . At first i was bummed no to ski with my kids / grandkids and still miss seeing them but the conditions at Titus made for a super nice day of skiing

Cool,

I learned to ski at Titus back in 94-95 while attending Paul Smith's and then didn't ski again until last year...now I can't get enough. I would love to get back to Titus as I don't remember it well.

Gore has some really interesting looking terrain. Too bad the only time I skied there, all the really good stuff was unskiable. I have to make it a point to go back and try it again. Definitely seems like an underrated place.

Gore is very MUCH worth the effort and with teh proposed new development there will only add additional variety and trails to the count

Give it a shot especially in 09 when teh new trails are supposed to come on board

This was my 2nd time at Gore, last was last spring and it was so so. This time, I hit some trails and was like "Whoa, that was sweet...where was this last year?" lots of good stuff, lots of room to explore even with the crowds, I'd like to hit again midweek after a good snowfall!! I agree the terrain expansion will be nice...continuing some solid runs down from the north side will be sweet.

This I would disagree with. They took some of the better tree sking up on the ridge and turned it into what they already have plenty of on the lower half......a bunch of boring green and blue runs. They will probably have some of the new runs labeled expert.....unwarranted. They label the Twister Glade as black. If there is good a foot and a half dump there is barely enough pitch to ski it. They used to call it Burnt Ridge backcountry. Why not put in a couple glades and make some interesting terrain. Instead they clear cut a bunch of blue runs

Though not as well published as the Whiteface expansion, I have read that part of the purpose for the Burnt Ridge lift and trail expansion was to provide better access to the backcountry and gladed terrain existing there(looking at what I have just typed that sounds silly). This seems as though it would be successful if the mountain maintains an "always open" mentality for the "in betweens" as they do on mountains such as the woods at Smuggs. Being state run, and new to woods skiing, I'm not sure what their current policies are for glades/woods skiing. I would definitely like to learn to play, though....
I do agree however that there is a lot of terrain on the upper mountain that could have been left untouched.
Oh and really, no one has poached these new lines yet?:spread:

It was "always open" and a place to find some untracked.....not anymore

This I would disagree with as the upper mountain would be unskiable without some kind of cutting.....short of maybe the trees in Chatiemac glade area
