Been lots of ACL/Knee threads lately and I've just joined the busted ACL out for the season club. So here's a poll.

So far so good.....been on the slopes since 82' - no knee problems from skiing, though I did slightly tear an MCL once sledding which prevented me from skiing for a month.

I did lose a season from January 7th on from a neck injury, so I understand the feeling of having a season come to an end from injury. No fun

Your poll is missing a number of selections. I haven't had intact ACLs in either knee since the early 1980's.

Bummer wa-loaf. Get well soon. So far so good, but the end of season knee pain is there. There definitely is some weakness in my left knee, but it didn't start hurting until a few weeks ago. It's subtle but it's always there; although it improves with a few days off. The tail end of last season was very painful. A month after my last ski day though the pain was gone. Weird. Probably something in the works. I'm fully expecting a knee surgery at least once during my skiing life.

Last year I had big problems with the knee starting early march. I kept skiing on it into May despite lot's of clicking and even some locking. Somewhere in June I started eating glucosamine daily (still do) and put an ice pad on it every night driving home from work, slowly things got better. Now one year later 90 days into the season it feels a lot better, like I won't need surgery I think. I was getting really worried because my knee was very swollen for maybe six months.

Many years ago I missed out on most of the season because of a nasty knee sprain, went against advice to get it checked out because I had no insurance, It sucked sooooo bad. All summer I went biking and swimming and hoped like hell it would be cool.

Wa-loaf that is sucky news, hope you have a smooth speedy recovery.

I sprained both knees this year, and was on crutches for a week but no acl tears. Left knee is still not right but am dealing with the pain and skiing as much as possible! I missed to much of last season to let a little knee pain stop me.

I answered "so far so good" but my wife did injure her knee. No torn ACL or MCL but worse! She bruised or scuffed off her articular cartilage on the end of her femur. This can't heal and doesn't grow back. The articular cartilage acts like a friction less surface for the knee joint and allows the knee to operate smoothly. The only option is the “microfracture” technique where they make a series of small fractures in the bone at the injury site. They use a small pointed device and push it into the bone a bunch of times. The bone will then heal and the surface will scar over. The scar tissue will then act similar to the cartilage. She doesn't want to be out of commission for the summer since we ride bikes almost every day so she’s going through physical therapy and waiting to see if discomfort continues. Knee injuries are scary she just had a small fall and the skis didn't releases. It was the twisting motion and the impact of bone on bone that did her in. Be careful out there!

In my mind, northern New England
I injured both knees playing other sports (soccer and ice skating). The first time, it was a torn meniscus. Heard it pop but continued playing soccer (toughed it out). Had to wear a brace for a month. Second time around, it was the other knee. Same popping sound so I didn't even bother to see the doctor and slapped on the brace. Did leg exercises and went to the gym to strengthen my knee. In both cases, I could walk so I knew it was nothing ACL related. I try to avoid doctors as much as possible and believe in the body's ability to heal itself. If it's manageable, I'll stay away from pills and the knife. For now, I wear supporters on both knees and stretch before skiing. Only time will tell if this prevention regimen will work.

I actually had done it a long time ago and didn't even know. One of the many impacts of my kneecap to me handlebar/stem while MTBing I think, or some impact wrestling from back in school. Your knee cap in encapsulated in tissue (patella) and it is stabalized by it. I got x rayed when I hurt my ACL and the doc was kind of shocked by the image, not really a problem unless I kneel on my knee cap on a hard surface.

I had the microfracture done together with an ACL graft a while ago -- good results, but you're right it put me out of commission for the summer since the doc said 6 weeks on crutches to let the microfracture heal up.

FWIW my doc said the articular cartilage injury came from continued skiing and running on the unstable knee after the initial ACL injury.

Tore mine in Feb 06', skied the rest of the year. Got the good ole' cadavera tendon..they formed it into an ACL in June and back on the slopes in November. Two years later and I feel as though the repaired knee is stronger than the other. Good luck Wa-loaf. Lots of stretching, squats, etc and you will be as good as new for the start of next season.

Did you know it was torn when you kept going? Do you think you did more damage doing that?

Do some research. If it is gone it is gone. You can ski without it you just loose stability which is kinda important. I say ski it out and worry about it in the summer. No sleep till may
