This is a beautiful thing... http://www.mountsnow.com/snowreport.html

I like this part best - "Now there's nothing we can do to change the weather, but let it be known that we plan to open as soon as there's enough snow on the ground to let boards and skis slide over it. We have no "opening day" inked on a calendar in the General Manager's office - our opening day happens when we see those magic digits on the thermometer and we fire up our gleaming new fan guns. So bring your tomato plants inside and pray for frost."

That is cool. Hoping it gets nice and cold for them soon. Maybe 11/12 isn't that much of a stretch?

Smart. Just smart.

Stick = higher prices on passes. Get it out of the way early and then it's over.

Carrot = 1) passes good at multiple mountains
2) we will blow snow whenever possible, wherever possible
3) we increased cap ex by 5x and you will SEE the difference
4) we have a long-term solution to our snowmaking issues
5) we will reach 100% snowmaking within a few years

That's the smart approach.

Agreed that Peak's approach seems to have worked well for them, evidenced by the strong pass sales. However, let's not have this thread turn into another Peak vs. Powdr PR debate. I simply cannot stomach another one. :smash:

Let's please keep this a Mount Snow Love Fest Thread... ;)

How early does Mount Snow typically open Beartrap? I haven't skied that run in forever. Maybe they'll fire up some guns on that earlier this season? Get some December bumps going, maybe?

I made no mtion of any other mountain. Mt. Snow's actions speak for themselves and stand in stark enough contrast to other places that the difference is self-evident for most sentient humans.

I've never been in love with that run. Every time i've skied it, the bumps have been real funky. Very oddly shaped and spaced. I've always had luck finding better bumps on whatever trail they setup on the north face. Whether its freefall, jaws, plummet or the one lookers right to freefall. Even yardsale, as short as it is, i've found has more manageable bumps.

Good stuff. We are very psyched for the coming season(s). We're quarter share owners at the Summit and ski Mt. Snow for 90% of our ski days. The Summit, btw, is also going through a thorough makeover/upgrade. They're expecting half the rooms to be redone by ski season and the balance right after. Even if you don't stay there, I believe it helps the image of the entire resort.

It appears that the Valley is also building a positive vibe, IMO somewhat aided by Snow's new ownership and investment. Their recent "Bears in the Valley" auction went much better than most expected with a lot of community involvement. So, hopefully the entire area can benefit and everyone wins. All boats rise with rising tides.

Does anyone know how much of a difference (subjective of course) the fan guns will make for this season? Until next year when the new pond will be available, should we see a significant difference with the fan guns using the water that is availalbe this season?

Also, for those of you who ordered season passes on line, have you recieved them yet? We haven't.

Beartrap is a sunny, warm day run. I've skied it in just about every condition imaginable, from powder to corn to blue ice (sorry Riv, packed powder) and I only really enjoy it on the soft sunny days.

Ok I lied, I enjoy it whenever I ski it, but I like it best sunny and soft. Of course, that's usually when the decent bumpers show up and the moguls stay shaped and spaced nicely.

I like the music too.

Good point. I've never caught it on a warm day. For me, i dont actually hear the music when i'm skiing or i should say i tune it out. no pun intended. It's a nice change of pace on the ride up though.

Sweet!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I know all marketing hype and all, Peak obviously feels they have something to prove here in Vermont! Getting the itch.....................

Also, Bear Trap can be hit or miss. Not worth anything if not bumped up. Always a good vibe over there. The more erratic the bumps the better I like it. It can get pretty nasty at times! Love a challenge! As stated previously, great place to be on a sunny day when it is zero degrees! Good place to go if the North Face starts crowding before 10:00 (limited terrain open). There have been a couple days when I made it to Bear Trap and lapped it a dozen times in an hour. Normal w/e day at Snow is to do a couple down the face before 8:30. Hit the North Face til' 10:00 (unless conditions warrant just staying there), then off to Bear Trap for an hour before lunch. If Bear Trap sucks, check out some other things at Carinthia/Sunbrook. The whole hill should be covered before lunch in order to make afternoon plan of attack..............................
Don't remember when it normally opens.

Is that you in the yellow gondola (covered chairlift)? This is a shot from 1986.

Could have been me! I remember one of the first rides I had in that "gondola"/glorified bubble chair. I riding up the lift with one of my friends, and he grabs a lever and does the standard "I wonder what this does" maneuver that many early adolescent boys do, and the doors swing wide open with us high above middle exhibition. Those were the days!
