I always warn first timers who go out west that it's veeeery different out there. You can drown in a tree well, as Erika almost did and just the sheer size of these places can be scary. I remember when they opened one of the small bowls at Alta after it was closed for 2 days and it was so deep even the locals where crashing. I'm really considering moving out there if things don't work out here.

I have skied out West at:

Vail
Beaver Creek
Copper
Aspen (Ajax & Snowmass)
Steamboat
Heli skiing in the Monashees, BC

I would love to hit Utah (Alta/Bird, Solitude, Snowbasin, Powder Mt, etc), Jackson Hole, Grand Targhee, Whistler/Blackcomb & Lake Tahoe resorts. Hell, I'd love to hit any of the western ski areas I haven't experienced yet.

I can get a season pass at Jay for the price of one weekend out west. Not for lack of desire and a pending trip has long been in the making. But it is not in the budget right now.

I honestly don't feel like I miss anything. I ski new places every year and am still exploring my immediate area. What will get me out there is the fact that all my good friends are moving there one by one. I'm sure one of these springs I'll pack the truck up and go check it out. Then I'll prolly move there as well.

I would think that some of the whitewater opportunities out west might ultimately be a bigger draw for you than the skiing.

I lived near the Whitewater mecca's of the East Coast in WV and a number of those guys moved out west at least for a little while. It was somewhat a similar reason as people who move their to ski. Yes the skiing / whitewater on the east coast can be incredible, it's just that the rivers/mountains are that much bigger with larger features out west.

I personally have zero desire to move out there as New England is home in more ways than just recreationally, but I can see the appeal for many.

The spring season in the sierras is about as epic as it gets...real ski touring...I know, I know...but east coast woods feels like a warm blanket to me...I love the seasons, the feel..When I can no longer take the brutal winters I'll take a serious look at California I think. 10 year plan.

Farthest west I've skied is Mount Snow. Money is the main issue. I can't justify blowing that much money on a weekend of fun and games. Unless I crash at a friend's house, airline tix, car rentals, meals, lift tix and other expenses can add up. I can blow by my entire winter's ski budget in that one weekend. Maybe someday I'll be rolling in dough or just stop counting pennies. But, until then, Alta will just be a dream that I live through other people's experiences.

Thanks to the Hilton Honor's and Delta skymiles programs I do most of my skiing out west despite relocating to the great humid South. Get out west two weeks a year every year for the price of my lift tix :), I even take a friend for free if he buys my lift tickets for the week. Last year I spent 2 weeks in Wyoming and Utah for under $1000 total!!! (most of that money was booze and broads). Sometimes this perk is the only thing that makes my job tolerable...

Still hit the Pocono's and Vermont when I get home to visit relatives. Dying to get back to Pico for a day this month. I love that place.

My spare bedroom+heavily discounted tix and home cooked meals can save you $$$$.

As snoskeek said, it can be done relatively cheap. I always fly red eye/at nigh to save a few bucks and not waste time traveling. Go with a group of at least 4 to split costs, car, etc.... Tickets can be bought online for cheap, I even bought Alta tix on ebay last year.
