that would be a major bummer if they don't open public this year... i haven't heard anything about it, so thanks for the heads up. don't want to drive 3 hours for a locked gate! lol. but yeah dude, skiing there last year was awesome. First time i had tried it and it ruled; definitley cool.

It will be interesting to see how things pan out.

someone posted an article on net detailing a town meeting a while back. i can't remember which forum i saw it on, but the article indicated to me that it might be a while before haystack opens and it will likely be very limited public access.

Nothing going on there now. I don't believe they will be open this season. They are planning on a high speed quad to the summit replacing the Oh-No double and doing major regrading to allow beginner access off the summit next summer. Private area with a max of 250 daily tickets to wilmington residents. Members will have a few daily tickets available also.

I'm gonna miss Haystack. Back in college we could ski any day there for $25. We started to go there more often than Mount Snow towards the end of school. The middle flat section was kind of lame, but the Witches had some decent runs.

So will they block access via the ridge trail from Mt Sneaux? Could be pretty sweet, having the whole place to yourself this season!

It's a long hike across the ridge trail even more so now that they won't be running groomers across it. It would be easier to hike from the bottom.

I really don't understand the nostalgia for Haystack. I skied there a few times, including one-time during the New Years storm from, IIRC, 2001? The terrain on the main mountain was completely uninteresting. It's flat, doesn't have a consistent fall line, and any semblance of pitch peters out quickly. Sure there's more pitch up in the Withces area, but it's tiny and over before you blink. Plus, and maybe this was just an ASC thing, when I skied it it had the absolute worst quality manmade snow I've ever skied on. If you can't enjoy a mountain when it's snowing 1-2"/hour all day, that says something about the quality of the place. I'm sure it will more attractive in the context of a private development, and it may have some great learning terrain, but I say good riddance. The place skied smaller than Ski Sundown in CT.
