I've never been skiing mid-week during the week between Christmas and New Year's. I understand that this is a busy time for the mountains, but I'm trying to get a grab as to how busy. Is it generally better or worse than an average weekend at most mountains?

If anyone is up at Belleayre, Hunter, or Windham today (or even this past weekend), please post and let me know how the lines and crowds were. I want to do a day trip up there tomorrow. Thanks!

See the 12/26 Hunter trip report in the trip report section...crowds were small this past weekend, but the holiday crowd will be out in increasing numbers as each day this week passes.

Frankly, the next best day for skiing in terms of no crowds will be this coming Saturday while everyone sleeps the New Year's hangover off.

My pick for the least crowded day would be Sunday 1/2/05.

I typically take a break from the holiday crowd this week.

Smaller hill, but Pat's Peak had great conditions yesterday (Dec 27th) and were still blowing snow.

They took my advice from the AZ Ski Area Challenge and blew snow on the Vortex Liftline, which was bumpy and fun! Thanks guys!

Holiday Week

As I've posted on other threads, I am taking advantage of local snow in my area and cross-country skiing. I put down a little fitness track today and was out kicking and gliding. With heavy snows in R.I., the south shore and the cape, you can avoid the holiday crouds and shed some of those pounds gained on the holidays.

really?

The snow here on the cape as usual is melting fast. I had a serious work out this morning. If I had any gumption I'ld be driving to Vermont for downhill on Sunday. Will it rain or snow there this weekend?

VT and Adirondacks are supose to get rain Friday 12/31. Catskill Mtns in NY may luck out and avoid the rain. Catskill ski areas Hunter, Belleayre, and Windham may be a good choice for 1/1 and 1/2. Looks like Plattekill also has a few trails open'ed. Early morning 1/1/xxxx very few people ski anywhere.

See Greg's excellent pictures from Hunter 12/30 trip report

Looks like we've got rain at Mad River Glen and Sugarbush as well, although there's a chance there will be a bit of snow on the upper elevations. Fortunately, it doesn't look like it will be nearly as much as the one we had just before Christmas. MRG's web site says the temps at the top are several degrees below freezing, so they might even get a bit of snow before it turns to showers. We'll see.

I was at the Loaf on Wednesday and the lines were the longest I have ever seen. Light snow most of the day made for a wonderful day crowds asided. My son and I took the Timberline lift for our one and only trip up to the top. Non stop from top to bottom and we were both grinning ear to ear when we skied up to the very long lift line. We went with friends who were newbies so we had to do the wait around thing for most of the day. Still though...

Okay the reason for my post this morning is it's raining buckets here in Solon, ME. I am east of the Loaf and we get about the same weather as they do. I was on my way out to do some skating and clearing of snow on the pond when the skies just opened up. Guess it started a litte earlier than the weather guys predicted. Ho hum what to do now.

Have a Happy and Safe New Year All!
