With the gas prices, unless they retreat, I may have to go ski at Mountain Creek..they even gave me a free creek card with each rental at princeton...

Wonder if that bus thing to hunta is still operating?

Buses will be running to Hunter... Thats how they made it through the last energy crisis...

There are definitely buses running to Hunter, Windham, and some of the other destinations in NY. My furthest trips by car this winter will probably central Vermont or Lake Placid. I rent a place up near Killington/Okemo with a bunch of friends, so it'd be a waste not to head up there at least once a month at the very minimum. If gas wasn't so high, I would consider a trip up to Sunday River, but I'll probably hold off on that this year.

Why whats wrong with gas prices? ;)

there are trains up to VT too, just a thought.

I'm just going to keep doing what I do and hope they come down before I go broke...I have my all for one all paid for so..its north or bust for me.

The price of gas won't effect the amount I ski. I may ski closer to home a few times. I'll cut back elsewhere. Skiing is exspensive. Thats just the truth. I have to much invested to stop enjoyoing what I love to do.

How about the availability of gas.

Nothing a siphon and 5 gallon gas can won't solve.

Now the only question is the availability of bail money.

Funny, I move into a bigger house...hey, it's been 3 years now....and I have a 2 car garage, but ditch the second car when the tranny blew...and I've been train-ing it...well its gotta be longer than 3 anyway....

I have decided to take my son to Keystone in February rather than Sugarloaf. I am able to get round trip airfare, car rental and lodging for $1200 for the two of us.

Sugarloaf is asking $1261 just for lodging

Fly out to Utah, flights from JFK to Salt Lake City run around $250 round trip...cheaper than to Denver. Plus you don't have to rent a car to get to the mountain b/c the resorts are so close. A shuttle will run you around $20pp.

Plus you get all that great snow!

I am honestly not a big fan of Utah skiing, I know that they get more snow, but when traveling with a 6 year old, I would rather go to Keystone.

The terrain is child friendly, they have the largest night skiing complex in North America and they have a gondola if it is cold.

I could also go without the car rental, as there is a shuttle that goes throught Summit County, but I like to have mobility.

Thank you for the advice though, my skiing buddy is trying to convince me to go back to Utah as well.

Pretty much 3 hour max for a daytrip, try to keep it closer to 2 hours. More than that and we go for an overniter and economize the driving. With gas prices we may do overniters more often. Easier to justify the cost of a room.

I like gregs theory when it comes to this, you have to spend as much time on the slopes as in the car. The furthest i go is 4hrs each way to killington. I think this year im gonna make more trips to the catskills, try out hunter, plattekill, maybe windham, its only about 2hrs there.

5+/- hours / 246 miles / 0ne way

Friday to Sunday is minimum trip to vacation home that makes sense.

We usually get:

-3 or 4 winter season three night long weekends based on school schedule

-Dec 26th to Jan 3 or 4

-School week in February - 9 days

-School week in April - 9 days

About 35-ish days in the valley for the family during "snow season", and lots more during all those other great times of year to hike, fish, swim, bike, golf etc. Probably will be adding Thanksgiving up there, too.

I will usually sneak up for some mid-week "mental health" days that, oddly, coincide with storm systems frosting the Green Mountain Crest. Hmmmm....

Basically just avoid the bug season and the mud season.

And the new reality of gas prices will probably inspire a lot less dining out, and many more family meals in - pack lunches and pack food for travel - much healthier anyways.

Working on the wife for a move to NH....but just gently laying the foundation at the moment. That will put us about 2 hours away. I'm not holding my breath....

How far?

I will do three hours each way for a day-trip, (Jiminy, Hunter, Windham, Bellayre) but I am trying very hard to hook up with as many LI skiers as possible so that I can share the drive/cost. I generally try to ski within the Tue-Thu midweek period but I am flexible about the days. Since I am retired, I have that luxury. I like to do two to three day trips to VT that involve leaving the evening before, (like on a Monday or Tuesday evening) sometimes staying in Greenfield MA (about $50 for a double) or at White River Junction (about $70) on the way north and then finishing the run in the AM to Snow or up to Killington. After skiing, either on day two or three, I make the run home. This saves the cost of an additional nights lodging. I currently have a very informal "group" that hooks up in varying combinations for these runs. It cuts costs, (my 4 dr, 5 speed manual, winter tire equipped, Hyundai Elantra is great in snow and easily carries 3 people and gear without putting on the Thule box and gets 30+ mpg on these runs. When I put on the box and carry the fourth person, it cuts the mpg's down to about 27-28 depending upon driving styles.) cuts lodging costs (we go "odds/evens" for the cot in the motel), and makes for great company! BTW, there is a "no smoking" requirement while in the car and room. Beyond that the only request is that you don't skip showering! (At least until the drive home.) Anyone interested in this please PM me to introduce yourself.
