How important is skiing to you?

I think my obsession with skiing is linked to the lack of ability to go as often as I want...sort of like why the Red Sox have consecutive sell-outs...demand. I have not been able to satisfy my "demand" for skiing pleasure.

So...I'd have to say skiing is very (borderline "extremely") important to me. It's a social outlet, it's a physical challenge, it's exhillerating, I get better (albeit slowly) every year. Gear to obsess over, escape from work...fresh air...racing, man...the list goes on.

Although lacrosse takes place in the Spring and Summer, I have the same battle in my head. The wife and I do ski together, but we are hoping to start a family this fall. If all goes well she will be pregnant during the upcoming ski season and unable to ski. After a long a long ski season (hopefully), how do a justify playing lacrosse every week when my wife is pregnant/caring for an infant? For me its not choosing between sports, its making time for my wife and family. Right now I am anticipating taking next lacrosse season off. This would be the first year without lacrosse in 16 years.

I play lacrosse too, I know how crazy that schedule can be. I've been playing for five years and I love it, it's a great sport.

That's quite a dilemma. Unfortunately, you will just have to refrain from lacrosse as I do with skiing. But as I said earlier, some things are just more important than others, especially in your case.

The only things more important to me than skiing are my wife and my job. My wife claims I have two mistresses: My skis and the fire service.

We need to live where we do for our careers. Thankfully, I can daytrip to almost anywhere in NE, although fuel cost is making that a little tough. I would much rather live closer to the mountains, but this is a workable comprimise.

"Middle of nowhere" is a realtive term. Some might consider Coos County the middle of nowhere. Personally, I think E70th & Park is the middle of nowhere. No offence to those who hail from Gotham. It's not my cup of tea.

I only ski 35-50 days a season and many of those are patrol days. I'd love to get out more, but this is likely to be what I average for the foreseeable future. I would certainly like more, but I enjoy what I can get. To fill the time, I tune my gear and spend ridiculous amounts of time on internet ski forums wishing I was skiing.

At the beginning of last year, it was extremely important, but after so much dissapointment, I kind of quit thinking about it. Hard to get revved up after getting crushed so badly. I think I still haven't recovered (the continuation through the present of the same weather we had all winter isn't helping much). Hopefully I'll get better as winter approaches.

Well let me think about that. It’s almost July and I’m on this and other ski forums everyday. The exercises I do to try to stay in shape are designed to improve my skiing. I use my editing software to make ski movies only. The hours of vacation and Christmas and wedding videos have not seen the light of day since they were taken. I have found myself standing in my front lawn wondering if it’s steep enough to try grass skiing. I’m planning next years ski trip to the Canadian Rockies (Panorama) that is when I can get anybody to cooperate with me. My screen saver is 176 pictures of eastern ski areas gleaned off web sites like this (if our IT Bureau finds out I’m in deep doodoo). I watch Ski Porn so often that my family is threatening to hide all my movies. (At last count there was 16 of them). I rarely spend more then 5 minutes speaking to anyone that doesn’t ski, we just don’t have anything in common. There are still several Ski and Skiing magazines setting on my coffee table. What was the question? Oh yea, how important is skiing to me? It’s second only to my family, but a real close second.

Sled - The Town of Williston is looking to hire 4 full timers......here's your chance!

Skiing used to "be my life" outside of work, but as I've grown older, I'm less gung-ho. Don't get me wrong, I still love it. It's just that I have lots of other hobbies/interests that I like as well. My friends & family are most important, then work (which I love) and then fun stuff. Skiing, hockey, hiking, travelling etc.

Wow! That's like both mistresses calling for a threesome!

No. Family really is number one. I'm staying put. Evil temptress!

HEH! I just came from a party where I bumped into parents of my kids.....former sports parents conection thing. Anyway, one guy starts chatting up skiing...his best trip was to Cannon. I'm wearing my Cannon ball cap.

Suddenly we are off on our own planet, what skis, where we ski, what we like best, etc. I can't stop talking it up.

Obvioulsy...it's an obsession.

and...GO RED SOX! 10 TO 2 over the Mets. Whoa! Pedro who?

Speaking of being on another planet, which one do you think Pete was on last night. Dang.

Erraahhhhh......sorry pal, I was about 30 minutes into my ski racing stories from last year when I thought "maybe I should reel it in a bit"...so I opted not to reveal my on-line obsession as well.

Besides...I didn't get the impression he skied much, nor does he appear to be a gear freak. Time will tell.

I was at Great Brook in Carlisle doing some mountain biking on Friday when I stopped to ask someone about the trails there. We ended up talking about skiing for a solid half hour before I got back to riding. Yeah it's an obsession...

I am coming into this topic a bit late, but my wife's favorite dillema for me is for me to decide between two willing redheaded women and a foot of fresh powder skiing out the door, that's easy for me, and powder wins hands down.

I started skiing late at age 12, but by 18 I had skied every month of the year and heli skied by the time I was 22. Now that I have a son to share the sport with, he also has the skiing bug and has 8 months of the year under his belt, and will probably have all 12 months by age 8.

I have stated this before, but I like snow more than I like sking, snow for me is a euphoric high, and nothing makes me happier than to have lots of it around me, I actually go into a depressive state come spring, when the snow starts to melt. Skiing is the best way to enjoy what I love most.

In short skiing is a disease, and the only cure is high altitude, mountains, and lots of snow covered trails.

I think of skiing all of the time, though I do think of other things such as family and work. I do have to admit that during this off season it has taken a back seat to family.
