You are wrong Ski Dog. Hunter never gets crowded. Its perfect. And its at least as challenging as Jay Peak and JHMR. So there.

I thought the bumps and bump skiers at Hunter humbled this [post="207718"]one particular AZer[/post] a bit. I guess I was wrong...

The bump skiers humbled me, not the bumps, nor the mountain. But then again, Hunter doesn't pay for my season's pass, so I can stay unbiased about the quality of the skiing.

Oops.. forgot the smiley -- :)

I'm just stirring the pot, a little payback to JimG. Hunter is cool and does indeed deserve more credit than it usually gets. There is a reason I will ski more days at Hunter than anywhere else this year.

I've skied 8 out of the last 9. Only "busy days" were Friday and today. That means you have a 10 minute wait on the quad and avoid the belt parkway. We skied onto D, F and Z pretty much all day. Currently dumping snow.

In fairness, here is the PM response I sent to kcyanks1:

"Took the day off today...I have to admit it, yesterday (12/30) was mobbed.

The skiing was icy, flat, and fast. Bumps were frozen crud. Bodies flying everywhere.

Dangerously entertaining in ways."

I was with my 2 oldest sons and the liftlines were not really an issue...D lift was not crowded and we rode the singles line at F.

But the quad was a wait, about 10-15 minutes depending on who was running the line.

And after 3pm the bodies were realy flying. Sideways on ice, then a big pile of frozen grooming sugar, splat!

I rode the lift with a patroller and heard nothing but "possible here" and then "possible there". I think patrol was busy.

Still, the skiing was good and very nice in places.

Can someone more familiar with conditions in these here parts provide some insight into who wins in a battle between heavy snow and high winds? Are we looking at windblown ice or a blissfull blizzard?

Point Forecast: Hunter NY
...
New Year's Day: Periods of snow. The snow could be heavy at times. High near 28. Southeast wind 15 to 18 mph becoming east 7 to 10 mph. Winds could gust as high as 28 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New snow accumulation of 7 to 11 inches possible.

That could depends on what part of the mountain your skiing... There's a couple of aspects at Hunter.. West could be calm - East may be blowing.. Most times there will be a part of the mountain thats out of the wind...
Tomorrow should be a trip...

Got some goods on Claires today... At the rope drop and cruised ahead of the crowd...

I agree with KC
It was pretty flat.. And the bumps were reminisant of coralhead... I did see some people powerslide... A good one down Racers Edge...

Thanks for the intel. That sounds good--most of the west side was closed on 12/14, so I'd love to spend some time over there.

I can't imagine why anyone even tried Clairs on Sunday. One ride up the lift is all you needed to see what a deathslide it was, as was racers edge, just not as bad. Well one thing I found out...my new skies really hold well on ice. Carnage everywhere. I think they need an even bigger sign at the top of it. I mean rentals and back loader boots does not make a good west side experience.

I rode it twice... Just for the F of it...

I punished myself twice on Upper Crossover...it wasn't so bad if you stayed in the troughs.

But bad enough to keep me from punishing myself further on Claire's

Hunter is what it is. And in my opinion, it's the best mountain south of Mount Snow. I stand by that statement comped pass or not. Thanks for insinuating I'm being disingenuous.

Think of it as payback for insinuating that my comments are unfounded because Hunter is too much mountain for me. "Humbled by Hunter" I believe are the words you used.

Its called trash talk, grow a thicker skin.

Actually, I was just reminding you of what you posted.

Trust me. I wasn't all that offended. Especially coming from someone who's ornary cuz he's stuck in the bowels of Jersey...

Actually, I was just reminding you of what you posted.

In this thread, I was joking around how some Hunter regulars can get all up in arms if someone says something negative about their hill. Basically poking fun, for the sake of fun.

The specfic post you talks to the great bump skiing skills you regulars have. I fail to see the connection, but I am not suprised to see your unrelated and unwarranted post - teasing Hunter or Hunter skiers is a sin around here. I'll try to be a prude from now on.

You have to understand that we have been defending Hunter forever. Most of us regulars don't even bother to tell anyone where we ski. I would say we are sensitive to the issue.

All I know is that I skied incredible powder the last 2 days including many runs down 44 and Lower Taylors with close to knee deep snow. I also skied 11 out of the last 12 days. Every day is different and all were great in their own way.

Yesterday on 44, Taylors, 42nd St and Lower/Lower K27... Total nirvana...

Yesterday in particular was amazing. Still untouched parcels of snow to be had at 10am. Mountain basically empty until 11am. Lines of cars leaving to head home as I headed up the mountain road! Deep stashes even near day's end. Everything lost with the NCP was regained and more. Low angle woods skiable.

Skied myself into oblivion.

Up at 5am to head to Killington tomorrow.
