I think I know...
He showed up to ski - waited a hour for a ticket then waited an hour for the quad while guys in starterjackets smoked weed in the line.. Then only found icey trails - wall to wall with gapers... And skied with cigarette butts and beer tops raining from the chairs above.. then watied in line and some big guy from the Bronx picked a fight with him... When he finally got back on the trail - he was run over by a snowboarder named Vinny from Brooklyn defending his girlfriend with big hair...

Of course JimG and I were skiing expert trails at the time so we never actually met Vinny... But I bought him a drink at the bar later...

You forgot the hour he waited to rent equipment...
And the big lungers people were spitting up off the chairs onto him.

Now I need to clean the coffee off my monitor again.

Hah. This actually makes me want to go to Hunter. So is Hunter like class of the stereotypes or what? I just want to go and sit on the edge of Belt Parkway on an icy saturday during Christmas vacation. So DMC you must break out the Jets Starter Jacket, the 220cm GS skis, and some sweet rear-entry boots atleast once a year, right?

Definitely more so. Belt is a death trap.

I met my boss and his 2 sons at Hunter one weekend. Solid intermediates at best. We stayed over on B lift for most of the day, but they begged to go to the top. I warned them!

We got about halfway down Belt and stopped on the edge of the trail. I had my back to the traffic and my boss and his sons were tucked up against the edge. I was trying to protect them. They simply didn't understand.

A person (sliding tool of choice unidentified to protect the innocent) somehow managed to barge between me and my group. They were travelling at least Mach 2. After they had cleared our area, I saw my boss and his oldest son. But all that was left of his younger son were his skis!

This idiot had hit my bosses son so hard he took him right out of his bindings! The skis were still there, sitting parallel in the snow. My bosses son was crying and his attacker was moaning in pain and holding their shoulder. I brought the poor boy his skis and talked him down off of his fear. He was OK and there was no permanent damage. He was skiing and laughing again soon after.

I left the criminal in a heap. That crap disgusts me.

Wow . . . how weird that Hunter continues to get left off of "best mountain" lists.

So maybe they do judge a mountain by one trail stuffed with beginners and cranky intermediates...

No, the readers of the magazine who believe all this rating crap are beginners and cranky intermediates. Hunter isn't listed because the main mountain is steep and geared towards experts.

In hindsight, I should have been more insistent and stayed on B lift. You know, the B lift/D lift served part of the mountain has some of the BEST beginner and intermediate terrain anywhere. PSIA did a teaching/learning study at Hunter for that very reason. But those facts don't ever make it into any ratings articles because most people just want to go to the top of the mountain.

BTW, I've seen collisions just like this one at just about every mountain I've visited.

"Cranky intermediates" - I love that... I definately was a cranky intermediate at one point.. Back in the early 80's... Wearing my dayglow jacket.. And cursing experts...

Me too...but even back in those days I was smart enough to despise the Belt and stay off of it.

That's the old rep alright.

I never seem to encounter these people though...then again, I gave up teaching there a few years ago.

Those folks are more or less confined to the beginner area at Hunter One, although I do enjoy the Gorilla stance these people demo when I occasionally see them straightlining advanced runs they shouldn't be on.

You can see the school in Hunter in this pix. Our house was just to the left of it. They tore it down years ago. It's a vacant lot now.

Who said anything about a crowd? It really isn't the crowd issue that makes Belt dangerous. It's a gaper magnet. The smart beginners and intermediates stay on B or D lift.
But that only goes to mid mountain.

The idiots who have to say they went to the top are the problem. It really wasn't crowded on Belt the day I went down it with my boss...but every gaper straightliner who couldn't avoid the base lodge if they had to was on it at the time.

If it had been crowded that moron would have hit someone else way before he got up to Mach 2.

I made the mistake of skiing it (belt parkway) on the friday after thanksgiving. probably around 90 or 91. I'll never forget it. it was the most terrifying experience i've ever had on skis.

other than that, i had a blast there last year and would totally go back.

And imagine if you had worn goggles and could actually see what was going on!

Hunter was always my favorite as a kid when we lived on Long Island. Haven't been there since 95 though.

The skiing hasn't changed a whole lot since then...alot of snowmaking upgrades.

The biggest changes are the new learning center, the Kattskill Mountain Club, and the completion of the last phase of the Liftside condos.
