I grew up in Hunter. The fact that Hunter is left out again does not surprise me. Its difficult for any of the individual Catskill resorts to compete with the larger resorts. After all the Catskill resorts are smaller then most major ski resorts. Thanks to NY State's forever wild laws, the Catskill resorts have half the acres (170-250) compared to VTs 500+ acre resorts. Taken together the four Catskill ski resorts compete very well with VT resorts. I would guess that there are easily well over 800,000 skier visits to Belleayre, Hunter, Plattekill, and Windham. This is not chump change. Add in the huge 2006 improvements to the four Catskills resorts will be (should be) noticed next year in various ski magazines. The Catskill resorts went from 2 high speed detachable lifts to 4 high speed detachable lifts for the 2006-2007 season. Then there is Hunter's awesome Katterskill's Mountain Club lodge and Village of Hunter improvements. Taken together all theses improvements means if you have not skied the Catskills recently you may want to take another look. :-D

Here is fairly well written article Feb 2006 article. As you can see it does not contain the latest Catskill ski resort improvements made this summer.

Alrighty! I'm definately in for a meetup at Hunter then. It'll have to be sometime in December...hopefully just a week or 2 before Christmas. Lets pray we have decent snow then!

BTW, I may not ever get to share another day with Jim at Hunter because I will likely be signing a contract of sale on my house here in the east by the middle of next week, and moving to UT by some time in November.

Maybe not, but I'm sure I can make some good use of the guest bedroom at your new house in UT.

Then you can show me around your new haunts.

I don't know Jim. Considering how much you love to ski those icy moguls, wouldn't you find all that powder a bit uncomfortable? What good is falling if you don't bounce? In powder you would just make a kind of soft "Poof," and then spend the rest of the day looking for the ski that submarined somewhere.

Very funny TP...how soon we forget our eastern skiing buddies when we move out west I guess.

I'm just checking. You do know that I was kidding. I look forward to meeting AZ'ers out west. In fact, I suspect that since I ski only mid-week, I will actually meet more of them out west than here in the east. Most members really can only ski on weekends. "Working" is such a PIA. When I do finally make the deal, and make the move, I will definitely stay in touch and look to make turns with you "flatlanders."

Flatlander?

hey TP, before you go getting all high and mighty ;) there is a saying when you transplant that once a flatlander, always a flatlander. :p

I would agree with you, but then I was born about 40 KM west of Innsbruck Austria, where I lived the first part of my life. "Tirolerpeter" comes from the fact that I was born in the province of "Tirol" in the mountainous part of Austria. So, I am actually going "back to my roots." :)

Really, only New Yorkers or a rare lost soul ski Hunter. It may be a destination resort for Penn. or New Jersey if you are hard-up, but it's the epitome of a local hill. Actually Agnew was the Governor of Maryland. It wasn't so clear that he was taking bribes, too. He accepted gifts. Futhermore, that famous quote of his way of describing the critics of the Vietnam war and was picked up by university people and made to sound rediculous. In fact many have thought he made a very good point about anti-war demonstrators.

Maybe only the lost souls are humble enough to find the soul of Hunter...

I know all the Hunter regulars I ski and ride with have lots of soul...

Negativity?

Party loyalty in the face of the facts, is really so quaint. Sorry I impugned the intelligence of the voters of Delaware. Agnew pleaded: "Nolo Contendre." The facts about it are here: http://www.eyewitnesstohistory.com/agnew.htm

Yes, it was about anti-war demonstrators. I for one, having spent over 14 months in Vietnam was rooting for them to get my fellow servicemen and women out. Our current administration is equally critical of those who now disagree with them. I guess history will have to be the judge about the "right" of our current situation. Feel free to PM me so that we can discuss this further without violating the Forum rules on political discourse.

In the meantime, what did someone do to you at Hunter that makes you so negative about it?

Well, I'm sure it has nothing to do with Spiro Agnew so can we please keep any politics out of this?

What did happen?

I think I know...
He showed up to ski - waited a hour for a ticket then waited an hour for the quad while guys in starterjackets smoked weed in the line.. Then only found icey trails - wall to wall with gapers... And skied with cigarette butts and beer tops raining from the chairs above.. then watied in line and some big guy from the Bronx picked a fight with him... When he finally got back on the trail - he was run over by a snowboarder named Vinny from Brooklyn defending his girlfriend with big hair...

Of course JimG and I were skiing expert trails at the time so we never actually met Vinny... But I bought him a drink at the bar later...
