As of today all of Hunter's single blacks are open - say, a month and a half earlier than last season.

Therefore, which of Hunter's single blacks do you feel is:

A - The hardest black trail at Hunter?

B - Your favorite black trail at Hunter?

I'll start us off:

A. - The Cliff - I feel it has the best constant pitch. I'll give second place to Ike.

B. - Way Out - It may not be the hardest but you can really pick up some speed back there.

A- Lower K27(simply because it's has freakishly strange bumps and it's steep)
B- Westway(44) - Nice pitch - nice falline - really wide - go as fast as you dare...

Single blacks, brotha. Single blacks...

A - I guess Hellgate, if you ski the left side of the turn. Always funky lines and big bumps there. The tendency for gaper traffic on Hellgate also increases its difficulty.

B - Wayout is the best single black at Hunter without question. A decent amount of character.

All in all, I don't think the single blacks at Hunter are very challenging, barely NNE black diamond status. The doubles are legit NNE difficulty though.

Upper Crossover and Racer's aren't that difficult (although, still more difficult that what you're going to find at other places in the area), but K27 and the West Side are just as difficult as what you'll find further north.

well, hunter is usually pretty icy so alot of the trails will be challenging. West is pretty steep and lower k27 is steep. The bumps that form on lower k27 are freakish as dmc which makes it pretty hard. I enjoy groomers, so i do love to ski hellgate, racers, and wayout.

Legit double black? Yes. My argument always has been that Hunter's dbl blacks are equivalent to many of those in NNE. Trail ratings are all relative though, remember. They might not rival NNE pitch, but what makes them challenging is the lack of grooming, resulting in big ole funky snowmaking bumps; or the often slick steep surfaces (e.g, Claire's). Many forget that Hunter is roughly the same latitude as a place like Ski Butternut. Rain is no stranger to the area. Couple that with steep pitches and you have the potential for some pretty challenging surfaces. Luckily Hunter has the snowmaking firepower to recover from those thaws.

Bottom line: a kick ass hill. And it produces some great skiers.

Oh I'm sure the place is sweeeeeet just from what I've read on here and I WILL make it over at some point this season. Didn't ask the question to start some crazy lamo debate I was just shocked that they have that terrain. Now I really am stoked to get there and see for myself. However, when I think of dbl blk (this is just me) I think of trees, drops, rocks and wicked steep. Obviously a trail doesn't need all 4 of those but IMO it needs at least 2 to be a legit dbl. Again, can't wait to check that place out!!!!

Well, they're no Rumble or Redline. Think Double Dipper at Killington or Ripcord at Sugarbush. Relatively steep and bumped; just not as long in the case of Racer's, Lower K or Upper Xover. I think Annapurna could be compared to a trail like Middle Earth with snowmaking bumps instead of natural snow.
