I was in the running for a promotion, asst. chief of the biggest building we manage. Problem was that I would have no time for just about anything else. 60 to 70 hour weeks, 6 days a week, don't make any plans they said. Give up skiing? Forget it. It's just too important in my life now. My friend's life is like that, got only 5 days in last year. I don't want to end up like that.

I think you always have to strike a balance in life. Money and work can only bring you so much enjoyment and satisfaction. While it might make sense to work it for a year or 2 if there is some light at the end of the tunnel. But otherwise, quality of life can definitely be worth more than $$.

You already have a beautiful house on the water.
You already have a beautiful wife who shares your passion for skiing.
No need to give up your favorite sport for a few extra bucks.

Good Decision.

I doubt anyone on their deathbed ever wishes they had spent more time at work....

Good choice..working 6 days a week doesn't allow much time for skiing..and the 60-70 hours is crazy...you need a good balance of work and leisure. The only benefit to the promotion is more money but what good is money if you don't have time to spend it..

I've lost one of my best friends/ski buds to the workaholic crap. He used to patrol. he used to get in 40 days. We used to get out and have fun. He used to see his family more than just in passing. He's been buried in 70+ hours per week for so long, I can't tell you. Sure. Sometimes I work a lot of hours in a week (especially when my wife was in grad school). When I worked ore than 42 hours a week, I got time and a half.

Balance.

Good move.

Funny, only time I had a job where it was guaranteed that I worked 6 days a week and 70 hours plus, was during the ski season working in management at ski areas. Never again. The older I get, the more I realize that time is far more valuable than money. I'd easily accept 2 extra weeks of vacation a year for a 10% reduction in salary, no questions asked.

I work at an Architecture firm and the norm here tends to be 60-70 hrs/ wk. When I say, "I'm going biking this weekend!" or, "I'm going skiing this weekend!" the common response is, "Don't you have work you need to do this weekend?"

I don't think I'd last one month at a place like that...I like to have a life.

It makes me glad I'm a pilot, I can't bring work home with me. I might be gone for 75-90 hours in a row but then I have 3 or 4 days off without having to think about work, and 12-16 days off a month. It's tough being away from the family for 4 days but I have plenty of time when I'm done working to spend with the family and do things that I enjoy, like skiing.:daffy:

Do you fly one of these? Just guessing based on your forum handle...

Well, at least I'm not alone in this. Now I at least have something to look foreward to this coming season. I prolly killed any chance I would have had for advancement in the company. But I can work on my moguls now.
