If you can suck up the upfront cost, it's better to buy the phone outright and then shop for a plan. There's a reason the phone itself is "free"
I had to buy the iphone outright, but $45/mo for unlimited talk/text/data with no contract ended up costing less than getting the phone as part of a plan after only one year.
