Well my family is going to purchase a slope-side condo at Jay:razz: as soon as we can sell my other second house in Washington NH. Washington did not get enough snow, and the mountains near us (Sunapee, Pats, Crotched, Okemo if you push the envolope) were not challenging enough. Can't wait and hope the house sells.

Just wondering if anyone has any more recommended mountains. We woiuld like a place that gets good snowfall, challenging, and possibly a mountain with some good intermidiate terrain. Also does any one want to give me some information on a couple topics on Jay, such as What is happening with the West Bowl? Best glades there, favorite runs, most challenging or even any tips or knowledge you know of the place.

ONE condo isn't enough??

As for Jay, I assume you like glades since you're buying there. I also assume you've skied there because it's intermediate terrain isn't so great.

Let me clarify this. We are looking at a condo at Jay. We are looking other places. We are not getting two condos. I was just wondering if anyone could recommend another ski area that fits the description. We also like the glades(add to description above).

Any specific questions you have about condos at Jay I would be glad to answer. We bought a slopeside unit up there several years ago and it was the best thing we ever bought. Which units are you looking at? Just a warning, you should be looking at this purchase because you love to ski Jay and plan to use it alot. In that sense it makes a great purchase. From a financial standpoint I bought several years ago before the prices tripled in price. The income I recieve from the rental program covers my expenses for the condo and skiing, excluding morgage. and thats about it. Also I believe the prices have leveled off for now. The increase in prices was because the golf course has finally been built.

As far as intermediate terrain, there isn't much at Jay but that should change with the West Bowl but I don't see the West Bowl happening for several years. I am going up to Jay this weekend for our anual homeowners meeting and should be able to give more specific info on Monday.

Thanks for the clarification...you had me scared for a sec!

As for your needs, intermediate is a broad category. There are intermediate bump skiers, intermediate tree skiers, etc. What kind of terrain do you ski most often? If you mean intermediate as in cruisers, than Jay is not the place. Sunapee is (but you say that this is not challenging enough).

Other places may be Sugarbush or Bolton. The former does not have many available condos right now.

I believe we are looking at the village condos. Also just wondering peoples standpoint on Burke. Is it a better all around mountain? And does it get enough snow to please the tree skiiers in the family. Just a question.

Stowe has great intermediate terrain as well as fantastic expert terrain with as good of snowfall you'll find on the east coast outside of Jay.

The downfall would be, you're going to pay double if not triple the price for a slopeside condo at Stowe than you would at Jay.

SnowRider Jay is a great choice, not much intermediate terrain, but some nice steep cruisers. their is endless exploring to be had at Jay and the best glades are definatly not on the map. If the deepest snow and trees are your true passion then Jay is your place, I'm very thankful that it is my home mountain and I rarely desire to ski any other area in the east anymore.
As for the west bowl, I wouldn't expect much soon especially since they are trying to finish the golf course, are building gazillons of condos and want to rebuild the hotel. I have heard rumors of them cutting a few runs out there and using snowcats to access as soon as next year, but I doubt it. I think a lot is pending on how much mandatory passports for canadians effects buisness the next couple of years. Jay does one thing at a time and things are much more laid back than other areas, but overall its a good thing if you ask me.
As for burke it doesn't get near the snow that Jay does, but has some great terrain and trees. I usually ski burke once or twice a year but didn't this year cuz the glades hardly had any snow. Burke is definatly a better intermediate mountain and less crowded, but doesn't have as much to explore, its a no-brainer for me.
You might also want to consider the mad river valley, sugarbush has a ton to explore and has great groomers and bumps as well, mrg is sweet too. mrv would be my second choice, burke third.
good luck!

I know a few people that bought slopeside units back in 99' for like 70 k and now they are worth over 200k. sounds like you are one of the lucky ones too. boy I wish I got in on that.

Have you looked into the new village being built at Sugarbush?...If I had my druthers that is where I would purchase...I think Win and Co. have a good vision on the future of the resort.

The village at Sugarbush will be significantly more expensive than Jay though. Clay Brook is very pricey. But if you can afford it, then that would be my #1 choice.

I love condo purchase talk. I bought off site, cause I did not want to have alot of rowdies around and had no intentions of renting my place out. Could not afford on mountain unless I did rent off season anyway. I use my place in the summer freqently.

To me skiing is great further North, but will the extra drive limit the amout of times you went North? Back to that quantity v quality deal. I'm just a White's guy. Glad to see enough excitement in the sport make a change you see for the better.:snow:

There are no rentals to speak of off season. 99% of the rentals occur between Christmas and the end of March. The other 9 months we are lucky to get one rental.

As far as the extra drive time thats what makes the slopeside condo worth it. We drive up Friday night. You can get up when you like Saturday morning and hit the slopes whenever. No need to wait for everyone else. I can always get first tracks at 8:30 when the rest of the family makes it out by 10:00. And the first hour is always the best. Even on a crowded Saturday there are no lines during that first hour. We then leave Sunday after the lifts close. With the condo we get two full days of skiing, where if we were driving in we wouldn't.

Jp tracker I take a similar approach. I am on the slope right after the 1st wave gets on the lift. I'll wait the 2 min not to wait in a line. Sounds like you work the slope side deal well. I sneak out Friday's so I'm usually at my condo, before I would nomally be at my house after work. Sunday's I leave when I feel like it, sometimes early Monday am.

don't underestimate burke's off map potential, meat, if you have only been there a few times, let us show you around, there is some of the finest "off piste" in VT, that being said, jay definitely gets more snow, and following the deposits into the trees after a storm is the best way to go, but the weekend zoo is getting overwhelming,

have you looked at saddleback in maine?

I've been to Burke more than a few times and used to ski there more a when I lived further south when the Jay pass was transferable everyday. Burke is almost an hour drive south for me now and Jay is 15 minutes, its just not worth it for me to hit burke much anymore. I never really did underestimate Burke's off map, Jay's is just better. that being said I have snuck into most every piece of woods within the boundary, and ob skiers left, lots of nice sh*t, I love the cliffs in the woods left of the throbulator (great name). i'm sure you know some things that I don't that are great, but my point was that there is almost endless backcountry to be explored around Jay that is chocked full of snow, lots of stuff that I still haven't hit after years of exploring. You can also always bank on the trees being skiable every year from december to april, can't do that at burke. Can't even bank on Burke running the lifts every year, weekend crowds are needed to keep ski areas open, and the weekend crowds at Jay aren't as bad as the big areas further south.

I really do like burke a lot and I hope it works out with Ginn, I don't mean to bash burke at all as its one of my favorites, I just like Jay and the Jay cloud more. I welcome your offer to show me your stashes next year, and I will offer the same if you trek to Jay.

Never been to saddleback, but i've heard good things, like to get there some day, seems like it would be like burke in a way. However its hard to make a 3 hour ride through moose country when i've got the goods in my backyard.

I love the Jay Cloud

I invested a lot of time this past winter and spring checking out slope side ski Condos all over VT and NH. I look at both new construction and old. The new Condos at Jay in my opinion are just ok. The price is certainly more reasonable than a lot of other ski area's.
Stratton has a lot on the market. Jackson Gore at Okemo is nice (pricey), the same with Lincoln Peak at the Bush. Stowe is really nice but out of the reach of most of us. By far I think the best value today is at Burke and also the timing couldn't be better. The new Powderhorn units which were the only ski Condos that I know of that had a 5 star energy rating sold between 219k and 475K. Check out the new Bear Path (www.bearpathtownhomes.com/) Condos and compare them to high end condos at other ski areas and I think you will agree.

Not sure if they are exactly a steal anymore considering that,

(a) There are none or very few left.
(b) As we discussed HERE, the condos were all re-assessed and are now worth much, much more than they were originally, so people are trying to ca$h out before they have hefty taxe$
(c) Ginn is buying whatever property it can get so it controls it all, including condos.

And

(d) We don't want too many folks to know about our special mountain
