Katie Fogel, the Director of Public Relations for Jiminy Peak has agreed to take the 2007 Alpine Zone Challenge!!! This is your opportunity to ask questions, offer suggestions, or say some praise to the men and women who are in charge of the Northeast’s Ski Areas. Please post some suggested questions in this thread and we'll select ten to present for official responses.

Also please don't be offended if we edit/change your question for grammar, tone, or some other minor thing. In order to get in all of the questions we MAY merge some questions but we'll do our best to keep the substance of your question. If we don't get your question in, feel free to post a follow up after we get the results...we are encouraging the representatives follow the threads.

As always, please be respectful of Katie and keep it civil. Also, please refrain from asking specifics about skier visit numbers, financials, demographic information, etc. Jiminy needs to be discrete about certain information.

We are honored to have Jiminy join us for their THIRD AZ Challenge!!! Please take advantage of this special opportunity!

I asked a few questions in 2004 about your mogul philosophy and would like to follow up. The past two seasons, bumps have been almost nil. The bumps on Cutter are more like broad, sweeping push piles than actual bumps. "The Mogul Thing" is so flat and short that it hardly qualifies as a bump run; great for learning though so I actually support this approach. I do applaud the bumps often left on skier's right of the Foxes. They are normally pretty good.

Is there any chance of getting a quality, top-to-bottom, side-to-side bump run? The obvious choice would be Jericho. If left to bump up, it might then live up to its double-diamond rating. Cutter could be returned to a groomer and along with Wild Turkey, Whitetail and Whirlaway, there will be plenty of steep groomers for the rest of your clientèle. It was rather ironic when a fellow AlpineZone member published a 1997-98 Jiminy brochure that touted moguls and bumps while today they don't seem to be an important part of your terrain offerings. Expert level moguls are something that each ski area should offer, at least on one trail. Jiminy Peak seems to have plenty of terrain to be able to offer them without detracting too much from the number of steep groomed trails. Is there a chance of more quality bumped terrain from the folks at Jiminy this season?

Congratulations on the wind turbine. I hope to see many more mountains going green in the near future. Would you discuss what, if any, obstacles Jiminy had to overcome in order to green light this project?

How did the riblet get it's name?

Any plans for replacing the triple? If so, is there a target season?

Can the Widows chair be converted to high speed?

Can you put a rope tow or used T-bar or poma next to the mogul thing? Something inexpensive but handy.

Any new trails (glades) off widow Whites Peak? It seems like the wooded area to the right of the widow's chair above Left Bank would be nice for some glades!

More moguls please! I liked how you kept skiers right on Foxes bumped this past season.

Watching from the six pack or novice chair - the 180 trail often looks very crowded on the busy Saturdays. Is there any chance to check spead for skiers dropping in from 360 or left bank? It could make the novices feel a little safer?

Thanks to the ambasadors and patrollers for keeping Left Bank a slow skier area around the entrance to the widow's peak.

Forgive me as I'm not all that familiar with Jiminy Peak as I haven't skied there before, but one question about summer operations: I read some time ago in an ski industry magazine that you installed a Mountain Coaster to build on your active summer operations already in place. How well has that been doing for the resort? Was it a good investment? Do you have any plans to add anything else to your 'summer arsenal?

Hum.......

Here's question:

The last two times I have skied Jiminy I have had very questionable run-in's with the ski patrol. First time, I skied a slope that was marked with a bamboo tripod at the top but looked more or less open. About a foot+ of fresh snow, not much base underneath, but very skiable, plenty safe. It was early season. The head of ski patrol and a mountain VP were at the bottom pulling passes on a snowmobile. They got one guy ahead of me, and then I pulled up and talked to them. They pulled my ticket with no warning, and told me to leave or they would have me arrested. Pretty much entrapment, IMHO. I was freeskiing on 201cm stockli asteroids....a super high end big mountain ski - people owning skis of that nature know what they are doing on whatever they happen to be skiing, without question. Period.

The second time was night skiing, on a cold ICY night where very few people were around. I was coming off a steep pitch into a wide area, the only person on the trail was a ski patroller. I was traveling at about 40-50+ mph, making large GS turns, and setting up to give him at least 80+ feet of room when I passed, spotting him the entire way down, but then he very clearly saw me and moved to ski in front of me, creating a very dangerous situation. I yelled at him for being reckless....it was quite absurd. We exchanged a few quick words, basicly asking what the heck he was doing cutting me off. That same night, there was also a huge bare spot of dirt behind a blind rollover on a relative flat section of trail, that was not marked, at all. I spotted it first run down and knew to avoid it. Later on that night, I saw a guy ski into it and crash, and almost his buddy right after him. Absurd...they have plenty of time to go around cutting people off that are skiing fast and in control on virtually empty trails, but not to mark dangerous blind hazards.

I've skied at alot of eastern mountains, grew up skiing Bousquet, held both a Stowe Pass and ASC Pass last year, and know numerous ski patrollers. I know when they are being professional and fair, and when they are purely out of line and disrespecting their customers. I understand the need to keep people safe. I may ski a closed trail or two, or ski fast in certain situations, but I'm well dressed, on very high end equipment, and do look like I know what I'm doing. I haven't been injured in a long time and have never been in a collision. Risks are inherent to the sport, regardless of what the ski patrol does or does not do. Personal responablity is a big part of skiing - a ski patrol that knows when it's ok to bend the rules a little for people who are very qualified to do what they are doing anywhere on the mountain and are doing it in reasonable circumstances, is part of what keeps skiing fun for many people.

Ski patrol intentionally hunting people is not cool, at all. Jiminy has a great mountain, but many people won't ski there because of an overly oppressive ski patrol. What do you have to say about Jiminy's reputation for having an overly aggressive ski patrol? Can you get them to tone it down a bit, or at least use some better judgement?

(please spell check me, thanks)

Thanks for the warm welcome, Greg!!!

I think I have a pretty clear picture of the policy's of alpinezone and how they are enforced, and will try to adhear to them to the best of my ablities. If you think I am getting out of line, please let me know before it becomes a problem. It's nice to be on a civil message board where people can't resort to insults!!!

Thanks!!!

You got it. Seriously, welcome. I personally appreciate your enthusiasm and creative posts on other forums. Thanks for being up front about your intent and understanding of how we roll. The mods and me get criticized quite a bit on other boards for over moderating, but most members here can attest that we're pretty fair. Good start, IMO.

I have no problem adapting to rules if they are clearly enforced. I only resort to insults on other boards because that is simply the culture over there (k-zone). I am relatively civil on epicski and have tried to self moderate on both k-zone and tgr recently. Thank you for you acceptance.

Maybe people aren't civil with you because you say ridiculous things like, "but I'm well dressed, on very high end equipment".... more importantly, can't you come up with something better to ask them than that silly essay you wrote? It was more of an idictment than questions. They aren't going to respond to that crap even if it is passed along.

Damn, HS, your Kzone rep just won't let go.

Unlike Newp, I understood why you threw in the gear comments; whether or not it makes your point remains to be seen.

Anyway, I am as new to AZ as I am to Kzone, so I have no clue as to how you got your following ( so to speak ), but I wish you better luck over here.

Absolutely. It's not like I'm attempting to ski at 50 mph on rental equipment, while wearing jeans and a starter jacket.....

But that's why I do ski in jeans some time....it's really funny to see how people's perceptions of you change when you dress differently. Then when you're dressed like that, start skiing with 100% aggression, and 0% style......you become the gaper from hell. It's funny to watch people's reactions when you make them think you're skiing WAY over your head, when you're actually not.

I prefer to ski for me and my own enjoyment; not for others' awe, amusement nor compliments.

HS is just an obnoxious little turd on KZone. His posts are beyond ridiculous. I haven't been on there in a couple weeks and looked today and every thread is a HS bash session of his making! He likes to compose BS about subjects he knows nothing about. If someone questions anything he says he gets nasty and then the thread turns ugly.

He's just upset because he's known as the KZone village idiot! LOL!
