I just got this media alert:

Snowmaking will begin at Jiminy Peak for the 2007/2008 winter season. This will mark the first snow made at a mountain resort in North America to be powered by wind. Jiminy Peak's snowmaking system is integrated into Zephyr, the 1.5 MW GE wind turbine located near the summit of Jiminy Peak. Construction of Zephyr was completed during the summer of 2007 and the 2007/2008 winter season will be the first winter using renewable wind energy at the mountain.

Look how rad Upper Liftline looks in this pic! I have to try to get on that run this year.

To expand on the previous picture. This is one of the coolest ski area early snowmaking photos I think I've ever seen between the upper mtn frost, the lower mountain remaining leaf colors, the patches of man-made and then the Zephyr wind tubine. Really cool!

Liftline, just about the only run worth hitting there.... and they are beyond conservative about dropping the ropes. Had to duck 'em last year with perfect spring snow.

Cool pic for sure, but it would be even better if that trail was a little more white, IMHO... :)

dont be a snob! yes, JP is small, but with night tickets as low as $10, then add in a fast lift & no lines and you have yourself a pretty fun time on the cheap

Now I am a big fan of Jiminey and ski there alot, but there is not night skiing for anywhere close to $10.
Prices

Liftline is my favorite trail there. They are just way to gun shy to drop the rope on it. One of the only trails that I often poach, because I just love it.

I bought a $39 value card which gets me a free ticket (its anyday but saturday, I'll use it on a Sunday when window prices are $59) & $15 off every other time I go.

If I go on Tuesday night(NY day)
4 hour night=$33
ski card =$-15
NY day=$-8
my cost = $10 :D

oh, and theres also the Sunday Mens Twilight (3pm-10:30pm) deal: $29-$15 = $14

After last nights cold temps, I'll see if I can find a pic that shows that those white patches are now all connected!

Holy moly! I never realized just how massive that turbine is.

I like Jiminy for it's pitch and the ability to log a lot of vert easily. I wish there was more ungroomed terrain, but it's a good place to ski with my father-in-law and brother-in-law who prefer groomers.

Holy moly! I never realized just how massive that turbine is.

.

How big is this turbine?

The wind turbine will sit atop a 253 ft tower.
The nacelle that sits on top of the structure and houses the shaft for the blades, the gearbox and the generator is approximately 13 ft wide and 13 ft tall and 26 ft long.
Each of the 3 blades is approximately 123ft, therefore to the tip of the blade the entire structure is 386 feet tall.

A full football field from the back of the endzone to the back of the other endzone PLUS 26 feet when a turbine blade is straight up! Or if you golf, the next time you play a roughly 130 yard hole, there's your height.

From an environmentally sensitive power generation standpoint, we should hope that a wind turbine of this size becomes much more common place in the coming years
