there is zero chance that manmade snow avalanched

Totally possible. Perhaps not an avalanche in the typical definition of the word, but manmade slabs bust loose all the time. In fact, it happened once before already this season at [thread="42536"]Wisp[/thread].

Not killington, obviously, but a place out in indiana. I guarantee you it can happen. Check out the K webcam, apparently you can see the crack in Dipper from the cam.

EDIT: others beat me to it. scary stuff though.

i stand corrected. guess i need to start wearing the transceiver full-time now.

Even a small avalanche can be dangerous. Every resort you visit you see signs on buildings " beware of falling snow" . You know that isn't a warning about extra heavy snowflakes falling from the sky. Case in point about two years we had an avalanche in our driveway after the Val Day storm of 2007 caused by our plowguy piling up the snow too high. When it gave way it didn't sound like a train like the ones I have witnessed out west but it did shake us up. When everyone was accounted for we happy no one was killed.

After a few minutes someone said they heard something from the pile of avi debris. We got out our 2 foot avalanche probes and dispatched "nosey", our avalanche mouse. No one had a dog at the time. Within minutes we found who had gotten caught and to our surprise, it was Kenny and he didn't die...I know...weird. We can't afford transeivers so we taught everyone how to snap their fingers...I think it will work.

In case your wondering I actually did take this shot....think what you want about that. I knew I would make use of it someday.

Nope. This is Holiday Valley's slide from January 2007.

It was very deep! The trail was closed at the time, but the lift and another trail that comes out at the bottom of the slide were both open. For a while, they thought someone may have been in there and they brought in patrollers to probe and an avalanche dog from a nearby private area (Holimont). They were also worried about one of the lift towers (turned out to be fine).

Whiteface has a history of slides... [Advanced skiers and riders can take advantage of the tougher side of Whiteface on Upper/Lower Skyward, Upper Cloudspin, Essex, Upper Northway, and Approach, plus nearly a dozen more black diamonds. Then there's the aforementioned The Slides, actually an old avalanche path, and it's equally challenging exit, Slide Out.]
