In this thread, it appears as though they do not intend to open up in the next week.

"At this moment the guns are cranking up top. We are making great snow. By next Tuesday it is going to be warm and wet but we think we can hold it up high. On the lower 1/2, AT THIS MOMENT, we don't think we can blow enough to hold up next week when the weather turns warm (think acre/feet - the run out to the base of K1 would need 6 feet of snow on it to MAYBE withstand what the weather bozos say is coming our way - we want those 6 feet times X acres to be around for more than a few days in early Nov). At 7:30am tomorrow when we talk about the weather pattern it could all change. At 2pm when we get back together, again, it could change a third time. We review the situation like this every day now.

The current pattern is not the way you draw it up on the chalk board. "

Reading that I don't have my hopes up for the 10th..lets hope that weather pattern changes a bit for next week.

Intellicast isn't calling for all the doom and gloom as far as I can see- this isn't even at elevation:

I am just a layman but i would think that sublimation in and of itself would preclude making snow for a base more than a week before it could be used. In other words the amount of snow that will be left from tonights efforts for the weekend of 11/18 would be negligable if not useless.

I cant believe that the majority of the large resorts in the east would be making snow if they were not positive that they could open for veterans day weekend..

Not sure about anyone else, but each time I look at next week's forecast it gets better and better. 30's-40's for highs aren't going to cause a ton of melting, and the nights so far look cold enough to blow more base. I'm still holding out hope for 11/10 or sooner.

I say stop looking at the damn forcast and just make sure you have all your ski gear ready for next week. Damn, talk about looking a gift horse................

My skis have been tuned for over a month now. I'm starting to sort out my gear on the bar in the family room. I just got back from seeing the new Warren Miller film in Stamford and had to check AZ before going to sleep. I'm skiing on 11/10.

And what did you think of WM's latest?

And what did you think of WM's latest?

The jury is still out. I would like to see it again before I pass judgement. I thought they kept the park/aerial stuff in check. They had some good footage but didn't over do it. I thought the stuff they filmed in India was great. The piece they did on Doug Coombs was great. The tickets were $20. With the price of admission you get a free midweek lift ticket to K-Mart, Mt. Snow, or Ski Sundown, a subscription to Skiing, and $10 towards tuning at my local shop. They raffled off a bunch of prizes. The one thing that bothered my during the entire movie was the amount of narration by Warren Miller. If I had to guess at a number, I would say he narrated 15% of the movie. And the parts he did narrate were old sound clips from past movies. Some people think WMs narration is corny, but I enjoy it. The locations are amazing, the talent is unreal, but the narration is what makes it a WM film.

if killington could not do top to bottom for next weekend (10-12) couldnt they download and just ski the top?

They won't open unless they can go top-to-bottom. That's been the policy the past few seasons. They also won't likely open if they can't stay open. With all that said, I think the doom-and-gloom forecast for next week is overhyped. It quite frankly think it doesn't look that bad right now. In 2004, they were able to open the standard early-season fare after 7 days of snowmaking. That included a brief warm-up in there as well. I'm hoping the can lay most of the base down over the weekend and top-dress during the nights next week and open on Thursday or Friday. That's all speculation, mind you....

There can be a very significant difference in temperature between the Valleys and the base areas and the top of the Green Mountains. Most of us use a forecaster who gives us temperatures at a few elevations and that is how we can plan snowmaking. Most people look at weather information that is from lower elevations and might not reflect what is possible. We start at Mount Ellen because the Summit is 4083 feet and it faces North and thus has the highest probability of early snowmaking. Also because of the GMX lift we can download even if we can't ski top to bottom. This makes good for early and late skiing and riding. For instance, last Spring we closed on April 30th with excellent conditions up top when there was no snow in the base area.

Well, like I always say, love the Bush! ;-)

At the same time, I still wouldn't rule out K for next week. I never let the weather dictate my plans, at least not long term.
