I'm another 3 layer guy but I don't do insulated jackets.
10 down to Subzero:
Expedition weight polypro base layer. I have 3 or 4 Mountain Hardwear zip turtlenecks for this.
Thick fleece with armpit zips
Gore-Tex shell with armpit zips and a hood
10-30:
Light polypro long sleeve tee shirt. I have a bunch of Mountain Equipment Co-op tops.
Thin fleece with armpit zips
Gore-Tex shell with armpit zips and a hood
I use the hood, vents on the Giro Omen helmet, and shell & fleece armpit zips for thermal control. On a cold windy lift ride up, everything's closed and the hood is up. In the liftline at the bottom in the sun, the hood is down and everything is open.
What is your shell, if you don't mind me asking?
Doesn't goretex kinda defeat the purpose of a softshell?
i forgot the pants...and boy my ass froze on the lift! seriously though;
shell pant and one layer...layer varies acc to temp. I've worn two layers under the shell pant maybe twice...and it was more than I needed but cozy
PASRs own BigDaddyK used to rock 8 layers on 10 degree days,,,crazy
