I'm another 3 layer guy but I don't do insulated jackets.

10 down to Subzero:
Expedition weight polypro base layer. I have 3 or 4 Mountain Hardwear zip turtlenecks for this.
Thick fleece with armpit zips
Gore-Tex shell with armpit zips and a hood

10-30:
Light polypro long sleeve tee shirt. I have a bunch of Mountain Equipment Co-op tops.
Thin fleece with armpit zips
Gore-Tex shell with armpit zips and a hood

I use the hood, vents on the Giro Omen helmet, and shell & fleece armpit zips for thermal control. On a cold windy lift ride up, everything's closed and the hood is up. In the liftline at the bottom in the sun, the hood is down and everything is open.

What is your shell, if you don't mind me asking?

Arc'Teryx. I think it's an Alpha SL.

Here are some shots from a few weeks back.

I am always a 3-layer guy. Variables are long or short sleeve for innermost layer upper body, zip mock T-neck or crew neck on middle layer and insulated coat or soft shell. Vents on either are open more often than not.

I can't wear turtleneck. In the coldest/windiest conditions I'll wear a thin Turtlefur neck gaiter.

In 25+ years, I've worn a second layer (silk long johns) on the lower half maybe 5 times.

I thought about this topic and I decided to breakdown my layering as a percentage of my ski days. The past few seasons I've averaged 100+ days per year and this is how my layering has been.

1-layer...10 percent of the time..on the warm..55+ degree spring skiing days.
2-layer...20 percent of the time..on the mild 40-55 degree days.
3-layer...55 percent of the time..on the typical 15-40 degree days
4 layer...15 percent of the time..when it's zero to 15 degrees or below zero out west..
5-layer..once every season or two..when it's just brutal outside..

PASRs own BigDaddyK used to rock 8 layers on 10 degree days,,,crazy

i forgot the pants...and boy my ass froze on the lift! seriously though;
shell pant and one layer...layer varies acc to temp. I've worn two layers under the shell pant maybe twice...and it was more than I needed but cozy

+1

Gore-Tex shell pants with Hot Chili's Mountain Weight or Mountain Equipment Co-op lightweight polypro. On stupidly cold days, I add fleece pants but it's got to be -10 at the condo to do that.

2 layer almost always, probably down to about 10°F. T-shirt and hard shell; I'll probably go to a higher tech shirt this year, but keep it 2 layers. Skiing bumps, down to 20-25°F I have to unzip partly anyways at the bottom of the lift. Pants are (mostly) a 1-layer deal, typically at least partly vented. Below 15°F, I'll go to two layer gloves, above 25°F I just use the light layer.

Heck, I think I only wore a hat for the full day once or twice last year. Now that I have the helmet, I doubt I'll ever have it in its non-vented configuration.

90% percent of my season I'm wearing an EMS techwick base layer, a thin fleece vest and my gore-tex shell (pit + core vents, hood).

10% when it's freezing cold out I'm wearing EMS techwick base layer, redpoint insulated jacket zipped into my gore-tex shell. It's gotta be really cold for this combo though.

I flashback to the days when I first started snowboarding and I wore five or six layers of clothes. What a mess (bulkiness and sweat freezing). As time has passed, my layers have become less in numbers and less in thickness.
