From their daily newsletter:

DATE: 01/08/08 We are closing the mountain today in order to conserve snow. We are planning to reopen as soon as possible, most likely Friday.

must be damn hot out!

Can't say I'm surprised given this warm weather and their lack of snowmaking base. Somehow I doubt they're turning away too many people on a Tuesday anyway...

I hope things pick up for them this winter...

Yeah my regional hill closed today too --too soft BUT still has plenty of base here in the Northern Dacks .

Not too bummed tho i hurt myself doing stretchs and really killed my foot with some flexibility stretching ( swollen tender etc) so i NEED some R&R. I've been nursing a BAD achilles for some time --sheeeit gotta rehab fast

Not to be a downer, but I'm surprised more places aren't closing midweek to conserve what they have. Smaller places, anyway. Tonight's low is well above freezing, so it's not like what softens up today will have a chance to refreeze tonight.

Interesting....

We were turned away Sunday at the parking lot.

Apparently their 1 lift malfunctioned on Saturday and needed to be inspected and repaired. Something about a chair slipping and too small cotter (sp) pins.

We were not happy at all although we certainly did not want to ride an unsafe lift.

Drove down from Killington just to ski there and got turned away. Salvaged the day by skiing Bromley which was nice.

So, you're saying you hurt your foot Stretching or Doing the exercise? Either way, thats a pretty crappy way to be laid out for a few days. Like spraining a wrist pouring a glass of milk.

Any other "major" mountains closing to "conserve snow". I love Magic but that sounds kinda bogus. Like someone else said, I doubt they are turning away many skiers by making this move, so why are they worried about conserving snow? Conserving dollars perhaps?

Well, the snowmaking didn't get working until less than a week ago, so other than on one or two trails, the base is all natural. I also suspect that they'd like more time to work on the lift (to examine it further), to figure out what caused it. If they were open, they'd most likely be down to a few beginner/low intermediate trails now/soon with this weather. (Not that I think keeping the few people who show up midweek off the trails is really going to save much snow...).

Agreed on the snow thing. I was surprised to see even the resorts down here in CT open today, but they've had a chance to get down a good base. Even @ unassuming little Mt. Southington survived Monday racing pretty well last night (my first time running a course and for the record I suck but that's another story...) But the guys down here all blew hella snow and Magic didn't have much of a chance for that.

It was pretty obvious @ Magic last week that the awesome coverage was mostly natural. And loose (as in fluffy, not wet) at that. I think the ungroomed blacks and all the doubles probably wouldn't fare well in this heat, even with minimal attendance. The groomers seemed to have a better-packed base but I didn't get a feel for how deep it was and in this heat even one run could probably cut some pretty serious grooves in the trail.

It does not look good out there for most ski areas that depend on mainly natural coverage right now. Hopefully things will improve. There is a lot of winter left.

I'm sure they will. Last year at this time we had the same conditions, then by 1/20 we recieved a fair amount of fresh powder and again the following week and then the big dump on 2/14 followed by a series of powder days just about every holiday. Have faith!

Yes, at least one other is. MRG closed all their expert stuff yesterday and today closed the entire mountain. They expect to reopen tomorrow.
