MLK Weekend

Just about every ski area in the Northeast will be crowded this weekend given thats it's a 3 day weekend for many, lots of fresh snow in the past few days (both in the mountains and down in urban areas - since snow in the backyards of folks in urban areas tends to make many think about going skiing). Don't let that deter you, even as beginners, since there will b lots of easy terrain open at every resort, and being a holiday weekend, if you're thinking about taking lessons, resorts will have abundant staff on hand this weekend to handle what is traditionally one of the busiest weekends of the ski season

I was hoping that since Stowe is quite a distance that it might be quieter. Wishful thinking I guess. This is our 2nd season snowboarding, my main concern is not having enough room for linking our turns, since we're still getting the hang of it. As well as spending 1/2 of our time on a lift line since we're up & down the trail quite a bit.

Hunter will be tough - rental lines will be bad. It's a big beginner weekend. It has a lot of beginner terrain but most beginners rent. If you decide on Hunter - try to rent your equipment before you come.

Luckily we have our own gear, so we don't have to worry about that. But, hearing it's a beginner wknd means there's probably not going to be much room on the slopes. Guess we'll try a day trip on Monday when everyone is leaving and leave a wknd trip to another time. Thanks!

With the current circumtances listed by drjeff, I'm prediciting this will be a record MLK weekend across New England. I'm starting to think even the "less crowded" resorts are going to have some lift lines

thats pretty funny...

scary thing though is, it's not that much of an exaggeration  Pretty much any major Northward heading highway across the Northeast this evening will be a rolling display of movie screens - I just hope that the highway I'm on that those movie screens will be rolling at/ *cough* slightly above *cough* the speed limit ;)

If we want to ski Stowe on a holiday weekend, this is how you do it.

Start at the Fourunner Quad 1st thing. It will open at 7:30. Lap that until 9. If the line gets busy earlier than that, they'll have the Lookout Double running or the Triple, which both will have smaller lines. Then hit the Gondola for a a couple of runs, then head over to Spruce. Ride the Big Spruce lift during the middle of the day. Then back to the Gondola, then back to the Quad to finish off your day.

I just might do so (literally) - I plan on leaving from Norwich about 3 - just debating about whether I'll take the shorter way (Rte 2 to Hartford and up 91) with likely more traffic or the longer way (395 to the Mass Pike to 91) likely with less traffic - gonna have google maps running on the blackberry non stop as I near Norwich to pick up my kids for sure!

I heard on the chair yesterday that this was the most heavily booked weekend at K (in terms of hotels) in a long time.

Methinks Wheelerville might be the best bet tomorrow, then possibly a crack o' noon arrival at Sunday after the Sat-Sun crowd starts clearing out.

I think I'll be earning turns tomorrow to escape the crowds. from_the_NEK is on to something up there... even the off the radar ski areas are going to be much busier than normal and I bet the majors will all be packed to the gills.

When I arrived at Middlebury around 9:45 a.m. today I counted roughly 40 cars in the lot. It was up to more than 100 by the time I left, 2:15. At peak times there even were lines of two to three chairs for the new triple ...

Now having gotten my big day of lift-served, any further turns this weekend will be earned - local NELSAP hill or two if conditions are good, and I have an idea for something a little bigger Monday ...

Um, I am seeing I91 North pretty packed with SUVs with ski racks right now at 10pm, even north of Northampton. I think the slopes are gonna be packed. Maybe I will try out some XC this weekend

Last Friday night heading south from Greenfield around 12:30 am I was shocked at the number of cars heading north at that time of night (especially with the snow that was coming down). I can only imagine what it looks like tonight.

I'm surprised to see how people say how busy its going to be. There's still 16 spots remaining for tomorrow's bus for Nacski (which means its likely going to run a little less than normal on a Saturday in the middle of the season. The day bus to Sunday River I signed up for on Sunday is still not yet confirmed!!!! :( At least I figured if the mountain gets to crowded I'll focus on White Cap, North Peak, and maybe Oz if I want a challenge.

The bus cancelled Sunday River for 1/16 :(.

Anybody have an idea of how bad the crowds at Loon would be on 1/17?

Traffic up to SR was heavier than normal lFriday night, for late. Braced myself for crowds. But not bad at all. Jordan was worst for me, but not that bad, skied right onto Barker at 1pm. Awesome bluebird day. :D
