Date(s) Skied: Saturday, December 1, 2007 (opening day!)

Resort or Ski Area: Mohawk Mountain, Connecticut

Conditions: groomed packed man-made with some churned up "powder", blue skies, windy, temps in the 20s

Trip Report: Arrived around 1:30PM on opening day to a mostly empty lot! Wind was blowing fiercely. Huge difference from just 2 days ago when I snapped those sneak peek pictures. Fan guns were blowing snow on Arrowhead, Nutmeg, and Wildwood (which was not open). Decent coverage, though not much of a base, on Arrowhead and Nutmeg.

I went easy on myself and stuck to Nutmeg for the first hour, getting my ski legs back and relearning the basics. Found that I had the same problem as before: if I thought too much about what my feet should be doing, I did crappy and almost fell. But as soon as I let go and just pointed myself downhill, focusing more on stance than anything else, it all came together.

Arrowhead and I have a bit of a history. When I was learning to ski, I had a real hard time building confidence to go down the top and where it turns around Exhibition. I almost psyched myself out ... but then I figured there was no way I could return to AZ with a trip report on Nutmeg only.

Arrived at the top of Arrowhead to a row of snowboarders just sitting across most of the trailhead. Waited for them to go down then decide to just gun it. Huge step for me; I've always been afraid of speed and being able to stop, LOL. Leaned a little too far back once and started to lose my balance so I started a C curve...and fell on my side. But I got right back up and kept going.

I did meet a nice woman who I'm wondering if she's on AZ or TheSkiDiva. She helped me get up once during another stupid fall (just turning around on the sides from a stop).

I have to work tonight so I only managed 4 runs down Arrowhead. I'm rushing to get this typed up so I can jump in the shower... But basically, great day skiing! Manmade snow was hard packed on much of the hill... a bit sleek and fast, combined with new skis with a recent wax and I was a fast skiing diva! New skis were great. 14cm longer than my last pair  but much more stable at higher speeds. I had a blast! Quads burned a bit but nothing too unbearable. I couldn't ski to exhaustion due to having to drive myself home and 6 hrs of work to do tonight. But I feel satisfied.

Pictures to come... Brian will be posting them while I'm at work. A+ to Mohawk for effort! They didn't have much to pick from, but they did a great job covering what's open and having it open for Dec 1st! :D I had a smile plastered on my face the entire time! :D

Sweet! Leaving in a hour or so for some frigid night turns.

Great Pictures!!!

I was up at Mohawk making turns this afternoon as well. Other than the wind, the conditions where outstanding for opening day. It's amazing how much snow they have been able to make so far this season, even after pushing out the piles today there's still places on Arrowhead that have over 4 feet of cover!! Not to shabby for Connecticut.

Excellent report..it must have felt great to be out for the first time in almost two years..
It most certainly did! :D (And good memory!) I was a little nervous at first, but that ended quickly.

I was definitely impressed, especially considering what I saw 2 days ago...and that it rained heavily after my stop by there. I don't know about you, but after the first run or two, I didn't even notice the wind anymore.
