I vote for the old Poma lift at Pico. If you fell off, you were in serious trouble.

When I was first starting out, I could have sworn the chairlift that serviced Sensation in the Learning Area at Ski Sundown was the worst...I don't know how many times I got off too soon and whacked by the chair coming around, which would then knock me on my you-know-what. How embarassing!

I'm sure that there are tougher lifts out there, but the Peak Double at Pats Peak is tops on my list.

You have to pay attention when loading or unloading or you could lose some equipment (or worse).

The triple at Jiminy tends to come around quickly and it's a low loader so you often get whacked in the calf. The magnitude of the pain really depends on how good the liftie is...

I believe that's the lift that nailed my wife in the back of her legs and left her black and blue. Caught her just right.

Yes, this lift is a fast one and it has caught the GF by surprise during the loading, but the Vortex Double has an interesting loading area. Be real careful getting into place!

In the late 70's, before the addition of chair lifts, and when the Challenger Run was the longest trail at Wachusett, the bottom half of the T-bar to what was then the top (Challenger top) was pretty hairy. The chute for the t-bar was narrow and had the same pitch as the steeper parts of the Challenger trail. After the half way point it was the most gentle t-bar in the world though. If you fell off on the bottom section there was no real escape as it seemed to be in a 3 to 4 foot wide gully in some spots. On one side there was a stone wall and on the other side there was an embankment that you needed to climb. Both sides had a wooded section you would have to cross to get to the trail. I don;t remember the area that is now where the summit chair was, other than the fact that it was much shorter that is. It may have risen as high as the auto road, but I think that is as far as it went (I could be wrong). At that time, the current rental building, minus the large addition, was the lodge, lounge and rental shop.

Also, when I was a kid the rope tow at Pine Acres (RIP- lost area) went up through a narrow chute as well. It was an old heavy hemp type rope. Granted, I was only a kid, probably less than 12, but that rope seemed quite steep and the fact that there were only 2 exits from the chute to the slopes meant that if you fell off you had to walk through the woods or up the side of the rope, usually carrying your equipment, if you fell off. On rare ocassion you were able to get back on the rope if a "nice" adult stopped and let the rope slide through their hands while you lined up your skis and grabbed hold of the rope.

One of our favorite things to do on the then so common rope tows was to all bunch up by letting the rope slide through our hands, then all grab on together...it was kind of like a whip! This was fun until we snapped the rope one day and it took them several days to get a new one.

The old twin summit T's at Cannon.

The summit T at The Crotch

The Eastside T at The Crotch

The rope tow at Darrow, particularly when Ormand got near the bottom of his flask, thottled up the Model T and put it in Third gear!

I agree about the double at Pat's Peak. That chairlift alway keeps me on my toes. One of my friends once was on that chairlift with someone, and somehow that person fell off about 3/4 the way up. Everytime i think about it i cant help buy laugh and ask him why he pushed him off.

You don't know the meaning of pain unless you rode the old Jet T-bar at Jay. It runs straight up where the Jet trail is today. 1400 vertical feet of leg pain. That was a toughie.

The T-bar at Pico that used to serve the A slope. It went straight up and was a sheet of ice.

Who would think any chair is difficult?????

Other lifts include the upper pitch of Burke's POMA and Cannon's Cannonball Express with its nasty loading area.

Agree wholeheartedly with some of the previous posts:

Old Ts at Cannon peak
That crazy bending triple at Kmart

Also:
Any fixed chair when sharing with a 'boarder (no offense)
Nashoba's former warp speed ropetow (probably was the worst in it's day)

T-bars are a never ending source of comedy - especially during loading. I used to love to just watch them load up the beginner T-bar at Stowe (the one by the Toll House hotel). Falls falls falls....
