Not really bashing on SoVT. I've skied Ascutney quite a bit (been 10+ years though) and it's a nice hill. My point is if I'm going to drive the 2-3 hours to SoVT, I'm going to Snow or Magic. At 2 hours, both Hunter and Beast offer a reasonable terrain:drive ratio.

Don't let a visit in mid-December to Hunter define it for you. The best stuff ('Purna, K27, Upper Xover, etc.) probably won't be open by then. Hopefully, we'll have a cold few weeks leading up to 12/14 and we should have some good terrain. They do know how to make snow, no doubt. If you like what you see, make a revisit later in the season to try out the rest of the hill.

Understood about the drive. You should try Ascutney again. They have a great pub now and the High Speed to the peak...........I wasn't serious about the bashing, just looking for an excuse to post I guess. I know it's all good!!!!!!
I probably will not do Hunter because of the (3) hour + ride that would be for me, and the limited terrain open early. Sounds like a blast though. We'll see how the season is going and make a last minute decision on that one.

How close are you to the Mass Pike and where do you get on?

And to risk further ridicule by all the Stratton bashers, I find my once or twice a year visits there very rewarding because of underated trails like Bear Down (they always leave it bumped), Spruce, Slalom Glade, (which they tend not to groom often) World Cup, (always seems to be bumped), and in the woods Shred Wood Forest, Diamond in the Rough, Free Fall Gully, and Moon Dance are all underated in my opinion. Any expert can have fun at Stratton on those trails. (And by not taking that Gondola).

Beat me to it...World Cup, although short has a pretty decent pitch to it and that side of the Mt. seems to have more natural snow...Shredwood has some really tight trees as well. (I guess I'll take some of that ridicule :) )

alright i'll stick my neck out. I think Bromley's duo of stargarzer and Havoc are underrated. Great bump trails in the sun with never ever ever a liftline on their own quad.

actually, i love the east side of bromley overall. Sunder is another good trail you never hear about. Narrow, always bumped and a nice hard left hand turn to keep you a bit honest.

a couple more in my very humble, ignorant opinion.

thimble and upper needles eye at killington. both rare breeds at the home of the superhighway trail.
challenger at mt snow. you hear alot about ripcord, jaws and plummet but challenger has the most character.
Sels Choice at okemo. why? cause if you want 100% guaranteed man made bumps on a semi decent pitch, you'll find them here.

Do'nt want to stray from the subject but I'm moving to Marlboro Nov. 1. (30) minutes further east than I am now. So I would be hitting the Pike in Auburn, heading SOUTH from 290. I would try to hitch up in Springfield with others if possible if I were heading out. I've done crazier things. It will be a conditions thing, we'll get some moisture anyway, let's hope for cold to go with it!

Ah, so 3 hours is probably right on. Hunter won't need moisture; they have plenty of that for good early season conditions via snowmaking. Obviously, they will need the cold.

I'll take that this year! ;)

Wachusett opened Conifer at that time that year for a day or two. I went up and skied, it was so wierd to be on the lift with bare ground under your skis and find snow at the top.

Props to Wa for their snowmaking, by the way. They seem to do it as early and as fast as conditions permit as well. I guess they have plenty of money to do so, though...
