Resort or Ski Area: Mount Snow
Conditions: Sunny in the early afternoon, cloudy after 2:30; SC, frozen granular, corn
Trip Report:
After a lazy start to the morning and a big breakfast at a roadside diner, I finally clicked into my skies at noon. It was sunny -- bluebird sunny -- and sunscreen was a must. Better yet, though there was a decent number of people on the mountain, it did not feel at all crowded. No lines at all!
Started on Exhibition. Snow was soft and getting to mushy and heavy. There was a short bump run on Exhibition but there were rocks and patches of grass sticking out in between some bumps so I avoided the nasty parts and just hit the lower bumps. Nice soft hero bumps. Did Exhibition a number of times and hit Pat's Pitch just to see how I'd do on a Nastar course.
Tried to get to Sunbrook but access to it was roped off. Ended up cruising through Deer Run and banging a left at every opportunity to get back to the base lodge. On the greens, there was a lot of exposed areas already. In fact, there were huge patches of water which slowed you down a lot. But, that's to be expected at this time of year. It was 1:30 at this time and it was time for the North Face. A woman at the lodge told me to head there as soon as possible and that was the tip of the day.
There were basically 4 trails open at the North Face: Plummet, Free Fall, Chute and Fallen Timbers. I could see Ripcord but that looked like it was done for the year. The Challenger chair was running but no one could get on it. Liftie told me they were working on some electrical problem. So, the only lift running here was the Outpost chair. All 4 trails were soft frozen granular snow. Not mushy at all. It was not heavy snow like the front of the mountain. Coverage was great. Aside from some exposed rocks on the small headwall into Fallen Timbers, snow was from trail edge to trail edge.
It was up-down-up-down for me. No lines and basically it was the same 20 or 30 folks there the whole afternoon. Did each trail at least thrice. Would have done more if it hadn't been for the really slow lift (a godsend later on in the afternoon when my legs were screaming for mercy) and the fact that I was getting thirsty. Skied the trails lazily, skied them like a racer, skied them with short slalom turns. I basically could do anything I wanted since I had the place to myself!
Would have skied some more but they raised the ropes at 4. Took Canyon down to Standard. Nice corn snow here. Bumps had formed and I got in some practice on hero bumps.
Great day on Mount Snow. Just had to catch it before it closed and I lost my right to be there forever through the A41. I have lots of great memories of this place and I sure will miss it.
