Resort or Ski Area: Mount Snow

Conditions: Sunny in the early afternoon, cloudy after 2:30; SC, frozen granular, corn

Trip Report:

After a lazy start to the morning and a big breakfast at a roadside diner, I finally clicked into my skies at noon. It was sunny -- bluebird sunny -- and sunscreen was a must. Better yet, though there was a decent number of people on the mountain, it did not feel at all crowded. No lines at all!

Started on Exhibition. Snow was soft and getting to mushy and heavy. There was a short bump run on Exhibition but there were rocks and patches of grass sticking out in between some bumps so I avoided the nasty parts and just hit the lower bumps. Nice soft hero bumps. Did Exhibition a number of times and hit Pat's Pitch just to see how I'd do on a Nastar course.

Tried to get to Sunbrook but access to it was roped off. Ended up cruising through Deer Run and banging a left at every opportunity to get back to the base lodge. On the greens, there was a lot of exposed areas already. In fact, there were huge patches of water which slowed you down a lot. But, that's to be expected at this time of year. It was 1:30 at this time and it was time for the North Face. A woman at the lodge told me to head there as soon as possible and that was the tip of the day.

There were basically 4 trails open at the North Face: Plummet, Free Fall, Chute and Fallen Timbers. I could see Ripcord but that looked like it was done for the year. The Challenger chair was running but no one could get on it. Liftie told me they were working on some electrical problem. So, the only lift running here was the Outpost chair. All 4 trails were soft frozen granular snow. Not mushy at all. It was not heavy snow like the front of the mountain. Coverage was great. Aside from some exposed rocks on the small headwall into Fallen Timbers, snow was from trail edge to trail edge.

It was up-down-up-down for me. No lines and basically it was the same 20 or 30 folks there the whole afternoon. Did each trail at least thrice. Would have done more if it hadn't been for the really slow lift (a godsend later on in the afternoon when my legs were screaming for mercy) and the fact that I was getting thirsty. Skied the trails lazily, skied them like a racer, skied them with short slalom turns. I basically could do anything I wanted since I had the place to myself!

Would have skied some more but they raised the ropes at 4. Took Canyon down to Standard. Nice corn snow here. Bumps had formed and I got in some practice on hero bumps.

Great day on Mount Snow. Just had to catch it before it closed and I lost my right to be there forever through the A41. I have lots of great memories of this place and I sure will miss it.

ditto

Nice report sm. pretty much sums it up. Had a great time and got plenty of turns in four hours. My comments on the day:
Was late arrival also, about 11:30, very unreefer-like but came across a few more free tickets Saturday so I said what the heck.....
North Face - Groomed everything open per sm. Great coverage that should last through closing this w/e.
Only did one lap on each and moved on. Thought I would give Carinthia a try - genius. Good skiing there plus the discovery that Milky Way was open to Bear Trap. Did a couple laps on huge soft bumps. Then skied reserved trails Shooting Star and Thanks Walt, (hoping they would not close Bear Trap unexpectedly). Alone and beautiful. Lifty gave me some looks coming in from that run. The monster was now created so it was over to Jaws for some reserved then a couple down Uncles dipping into Fantastics. All had enough snow and had finally softened up! Most natural and woods had remained frozen til' mid-afternnoon. I beleive Bear Trap and Carinthia are now closed. Plenty of snow (before last nights rain) if you want to get out for one last hurrah there.
Will be back to close it next Sunday the 8th!
Forgot my camera Andy, I had such a late start............................screwed me up packing..........

Hi andyzee. I actually have some shots of the Mount Snow trip. I just need li'l snowmonster's help in posting them. Unfortunately, most of the shots were of li'l snowmonster hamming it up. She actually reminded me to bring the camera this time because she says "so that andy stops blaming me!" Ha Ha Ha! She's calling it a season already and wants me to slap on the storage wax on her skis.

reefer, would have been great to meet you. Thanks for the kind words on the post. Sounds like I shouldn't have given up on Carinthia too easily. As soon as I saw the ropes, I said "forget it" and went to North Face. Were you at the main base lodge too? Li'l snowmonster was actually in there the whole afternoon working on her computer. Looks like Snow will make it to next week if the darned r*&n doesn't get to it too much. Hope to ski with you someday.

Was in the Main lodge at both ends - 11:30 - 11:45, then 3:45 - 4:00. Didn't think I would be there or I would have set up a meeting place. Next year we'll cross paths for sure - unless you're having Mt. Snow "deck" burgers for Easter.................
Got lucky. You had to take the Carinthia lift to see Bear Trap was "possibly" open. I always try to canvass the whole mountain at one point or another, sometimes you just never know what you'll find.

reefer, ahhh, deck burgers. I like how their smell rises up the mountain and make you hungry. Also, with all the sunbathers and people eating, it leaves more trails for folks like us. See you soon.

Newpylong, it was a great weekend. I'll definitely be skiing Saturday though it's a choice now between Snow and K.

I will definitely be at Mt. Snow on Sunday the 8th with my daughter. I'll be further up North Thursday and Friday, so if you want to meet somewhere I can't respond til' Friday night/Saturday, but would love to do a few runs with some AZers.

reefer, am definitely skiing on Saturday. Question is whether I head to Maine (the Rivah or the Loaf) or Vermont (Snow or K). A lot depends on where the snow falls and where li'l snowmonster wants to go (figures). Anyway, if she votes for Snow, I'll let you know. Be good to meet another AZ'er.
