Place skied: Mad River Glen
Date: 2-16-08
Conditions: Powder (6" new-deep in woods), packed powder, a little hardpack on groomers, a little ice on back of moguls

So my son and I got on the road from southeastern NH about 6am. As we neared the VT border on Rt 89, the highway guys were doing a bit of snowbank maintenance and salting the roads. I found that I had no blooshit and was unable to clear my windshield. We stopped at the gas station across the highway from Whateback and got some. The thermometer read zero. The sky was clear and I figured we were freeze our butts off later.

We got on the mountain about 9:30 and the lift lines were slow and long. On the upside there was about 4 to 6 inches of dry, fluffy snow that had coated the mountain the night before. The sky was as blue as could be.

We got on the double and were immediately in love with the place. What a great vibe!

We found ourselves in the woods pretty quickly and loving it. We took a few more runs and caught up with a college kid we know who is going to UVM.

From there we took the single chair. Fall in love #2.

Again, it wasn't long till we were in some woods. We mixed that up with some great bumped up gnarley trails.

At lunch we hung out with some MRG junkies from Saratoga. We bump skied with them a bit (I sucked but loved it). We knocked off a few more runs and on the last one I managed to get a branch in the face resulting in minor bloodshed but no pain.

We didn't seem to get many runs in due to the lines but the quality of the ski day surpassed most. We will be back.

A final note: on the way back, we found a car wash to help purge my Jimmy of its 200# of acquired road salt. We then applied the newly-earned ski it if you can bumper sticker.

Cool. Glad you enjoyed it. Looks like you picked a great day to go.

One never gets in too many runs at MRG (at least compared to other mountains) because the runs are long & demanding. Your average run at MRG takes 30-40 minutes of ski time. We were there 10 days ago, skied wire-to-wire with an hour break for lunch & still only skied 9 runs. But those 9 runs were like 14-16 runs at some other mountain. Not that the number of runs is all that important but MRG is definitely different in that regard than other places.

I take the bloody face as a good sign. Both my days there this year resulted in a little spilled. No pain, no fun!

Glad you decided to go in the end. Looks like you weren't disappointed in the conditions. Nice pics, it looks even better than when I was there on Thrusday! :D

I just saw this, but nice report and I'm glad you had such a good time. I love that picture with the trees and the untracked snow. Pure Mad River. Same with the picture of the single You get on that single and you look at the terrain and the woods and the view (on a good, clear day) and you know you're somewhere special.

Re: the lines. The only time I see lines at Mad River are Saturday, Sunday morning, and holidays. You had a Saturday and a holiday together, which is going to mean long lines. If you can avoid those times you can usually get right onto the lifts. This afternoon, when my son and I skied up to the single at about two, there were only five people in front of us. Your best bet is to wait for a good storm midweek, then play hooky for day and you will get plenty of runs in.

I have skied for nearly 40 years and this was clearly one of my favorite ski days ever.

Chris,
You really understand the word "vibe" when you go to MRG. And I'll bet any concern about "freezing your butt off" was quickly mitigated by the workout you got!
It's entirely understandable why folks call it a "cult."
