Place skied: Mad River Glen
Date: 2-16-08
Conditions: Powder (6" new-deep in woods), packed powder, a little hardpack on groomers, a little ice on back of moguls
So my son and I got on the road from southeastern NH about 6am. As we neared the VT border on Rt 89, the highway guys were doing a bit of snowbank maintenance and salting the roads. I found that I had no blooshit and was unable to clear my windshield. We stopped at the gas station across the highway from Whateback and got some. The thermometer read zero. The sky was clear and I figured we were freeze our butts off later.
We got on the mountain about 9:30 and the lift lines were slow and long. On the upside there was about 4 to 6 inches of dry, fluffy snow that had coated the mountain the night before. The sky was as blue as could be.
We got on the double and were immediately in love with the place. What a great vibe!
We found ourselves in the woods pretty quickly and loving it. We took a few more runs and caught up with a college kid we know who is going to UVM.
From there we took the single chair. Fall in love #2.
Again, it wasn't long till we were in some woods. We mixed that up with some great bumped up gnarley trails.
At lunch we hung out with some MRG junkies from Saratoga. We bump skied with them a bit (I sucked but loved it). We knocked off a few more runs and on the last one I managed to get a branch in the face resulting in minor bloodshed but no pain.
We didn't seem to get many runs in due to the lines but the quality of the ski day surpassed most. We will be back.
A final note: on the way back, we found a car wash to help purge my Jimmy of its 200# of acquired road salt. We then applied the newly-earned ski it if you can bumper sticker.
