Including Grand Canyon, Slalom Hill, Catamount Bowl and Lower Antelope. Travesty or not?

Snow preservation strategy?

That's what I was thinking too, but their website makes it sound like it was done to 'improve' the skiing...

Twenty three of which have been groomed recently for your turning pleasure and will be skiing exquisitely.

Seems kinda questionable to me, but then again I haven't even been up there this year so I have no idea what kind of shape the trails were in...

I really don't have a problem with it. Just don't recall it happening recently. I have to imagine that surface was pretty rough, despite the ~foot last week. Good to see they're back at 100% open now though. They need another dump. That's the bottom line.

I suppose as long as they don't make a habit of it then it's not a big deal... ;)

Some of those trails needed grooming. They had enough snow for coverage, but it was unevenly distributed, not to mention some horrific bits of ice. A big dump would have been better, but of course, we haven't had that. Now that the base is groomed out, they conditions will gradually return to their natural way.

I was at MRG yesterday and it was awesome. They did do some grooming on some of the connecting trails but it was absolutely nessasary to keep the place open.

There was still a ton of nice bumped up ungroomed stuff (and even a tiny bit of fresh untouched snow) to have a blast on. In all I found the cover at MRG to be even better than what i found on Castlerock at Sugarbush the day before.

They need to get a winch cat up there on Chute. That trail's a mess, those bumps all need to get mowed down . . .;-)

Any chance they can get a groomer into Paradise? :spin:

If they didn't groom people would be complaining about the hardpack conditions.

ya think so? Everytime I've been there (including this past Saturday) was nobody, I mean nobody complaining about anything. I felt vastly outnumbered by the shareholders, who all knew each other, and just got out there and skied. I heard no whining about anything. I think only the outsiders would be complaining, but most of them are generally scared away by their rep. I believe I'd be castigated as a wimp if I complained about hardpack.

Unless of course you were being sarcastic. If so, scratch my remarks! :)

That was before the fresh snow, right? Always good to reset the bumps after a rain/freeze event. The only travesty is not being able to groom out everything prior to a big dump to reset everything after the nasty weather was done.

Just read it on the Web site. It sounded like it was recently.

I checked the web site during the weekend, either Friday or Saturday night, and it said they were going to mow down the bumps on most of the trails. My interpretation of that was they were doing it Saturday evening in expectation of the snow falling that night. They might have mowed again, but "as of late" could mean two days ago. They are getting more snow Wednesday I believe. Mow the crap down and start again with a fresh base, works fine for me.

Would you rather have the mountain closed because of bare spots or groomed for one morning. When the white stuff does not come out of the guns or the sky you need to push it around sometimes to keep the grass and the mud covered.

I would be very surprised to see any grass or mud at Mad River Glen before or after they groomed. Plenty of snow in Northern Vermont right now. The problem was the way the base setup after the rain/freeze events of the previous week. A foot and a half of snow helps but having that snow fall over a flat surface instead of a hard packed icy bumpy scratchy surface makes a world of difference for longevity of good conditions. MRG has done this before. Usually see this once per season from my recollections to reset things. Not like they winch groomed Paradise and Fall Line
