Heading to Mad River Glen next week. Never been there. Has anyone been lately? What are the conditions like? What are the best trails?

Conditions and trails

The best trails aren't listed on the maps. Find yourself a local and try to ski with them, that's your best bet to find the isolated tree runs. In general, the best runs are off the single chair, but the lift lines and speed of the chair means that you won't get very many runs. At the top of the lift, go right, past the ski patrol house, and follow the tracks in the woods. If you want to get more runs, stick to the double.

From their conditions page http://www.madriverglen.com/conditions.php it looks like conditions are pretty good but who knows what the next week will bring. Since they really don't groom, rain followed by cold can create horrible conditions.

Thanks David. We will be going up there next Friday. Will the lift line at the single be bad even on a weekday? How slow is the single? 10 minutes up? 20?

The single chair takes 14 minutes, I think. I've never been there on a regular weekday, so I can't comment on the wait in line. I suspect it'll pretty short with the snow conditions having been so lousy this season. If there is a powder day, people will come out of the woodwork.

Just in case you don't know, snowboards aren't allowed at MRG.

I don't ride so it doesn't affect me, but why doesn't MRG allow snowboarders?

I'm guessing the conditions are gonna stink at MRG due to the thaw/freezes we've been having. Anyone know for sure?

The official reason is that they derail the single chair when they get off, because they have to push off to the side.

Unofficially, the shareholders of MRG just like it this way. It's fine with me. Boarders are welcome to hike up and ride down if they want, and some do.

HERE is some information on MRG's stance on the snowboarding ban.
