My 5 yr old son is anxious to start snowboarding. Mt Peter, NY, offers free newbie lessons with an adult lift ticket purchase. Anyone here had any experience with this? Gracias, in advance.

Was there once, the first year me and my wife started skiing, small vertical, inexpensive, seemed like at lot was aimed towards school kids. Great for beginners, me and my wife got a lot out of it the one time we were there.

Mt. Peter is a great place for learning. It is the oldest ski area in NYS and has lots of cool character for being so close to NYC. They have a very active race program that competes against the big Catskills areas.

My 5 y.o. and myself have season's passes. 45 mins away for us and IMO it is much better than Thunder Ridge (f/k/a Big Birch), mostly due to the fact that it has a more consistent vertical and also I think better grooming and snowmaking.

As for the free lessons, probably will get a young instructor (older teen/college aged), however they probably have more experience dealing with newbies and will do the backbreaking work of skiing backward bending over and holding the tips together. Oh wait, you said snowboarding? I expected more from you Dr. SKImeister. ;)

Thanks for the input, folks. It looks like Mt Peter is a winner for what we're looking for.

My teenage daughters both snowboard and they've been successful in tainting my sons and convincing them to ride rather than ski.

*shrug*

I've decided to try to avoid the mob that it sounds like the freebies attract and we'll do the kids' program on Tuesday.

Mt. Peter was started by Macy's Department Store in NYC in 1936.

Macy's wanted their own ski area so their customers could have some place to try out the ski equipment and ski clothing that they bought in Macy's!

Macy's and several other large NYC department stores had "ski slides" inside their stores. They were made out of wood and had carpeting on the top of them and then they were covered with Borax soap crystals to give it the look and feel of real snow. Customers had a chance to try out the skis and boots before buying them.
