Beautiful afternoon today, so glad I managed to get out for an early afternoon ride. Met up with Trev around 1:45 at Scoville and we headed into Jug for a warm up. I was just feeling really good today and had it on my mind to knock a few things off my to-do list. The first was hitting the ladder drop on Jug-A-lug cleanly. The last two time I tried that drop my landings were sketchy at best. The last time I hit that drop was back in April and after I landed I ended up in the brush off the side of the trail and then fell on my ass. While I was scoping out the line a couple of older guys (aka Douchebags, I will touch on that later) came by and decided to stop and watch. So I hit the drop and landed it really clean. We chatted with the guys for a few minutes and then went on our way. I was feeling really good about that drop and felt it was time to hit the larger one across the road in Sessions. It took me 4 or 5 tries to figure out the approach, there is a sharp right hand turn before the ladder that was giving me problems. On what I decided was going to be my last attempt I just went for it and landed pretty smooth. Surprisingly the down hill landing really softened things out and it barley felt like I hit a drop at all.

We decided to skip the sessions side as we had a report from Rueler that its still a muddy mess. We headed for the Cemetery Twisties. Trev took the lead for this part of the ride, and I really didn’t know what to expect. He had a really rough start on the warm-up loop and I guess I was expecting more of the same. Apparently he got it out of his system because he was hauling ass! We killed it through the cemetery, and Trev’s only dab was on the first rocky climb after the stream bed crossing that was kind of greasy. I somehow managed to get by him at this point and I just blasted through all of the rocky sections to the fire road. Trev wasn’t far behind. We took a short break and then headed for the FKC. We were both really hauling up the FKC until we both had problems on that rocky left hand up hill turn that always gives us trouble. I was still feeling really good about the drops and the pace we were keeping and I just knew that I was going to clean that last section of ledge on the FKC. I was feeling strong and went at it with a monster truck mentality. My plan was to go at it really fast in a high gear and let the suspension do all the work while I blasted up the thing. So I blasted over the first few rocks and then nailed the large root head on and went OTB hard. I guess the Monster truck approach wasn’t the best idea. So Trev and I decided to session the spot a while and every attempt I made it several feet further up. Trev was having trouble getting over that large root (the one I OTB’d on), but on his 4th or 5th try he cleaned the entire section like he had done it 100 times before. I gave it one more try but only made it ¾ of the way up. Nice one Trev!

From there we crossed the fire road and came upon the 3rd thing I planned to cross from my to-do-list. There is a steep rock roller I have wanted to do for a while (the one that Nate from CF and JP did). We usually ride down to the right of it. The approach is really rocky and it took me 4 or 5 tries to get the line and hit the thing. Like most rollers it was pretty easy, and looking back I can’t believe I was so scared of it. From there we hit the Cornwall DH with Trev in the lead. He kept apologizing for slowing me down, and asking me if I wanted to pass. I really couldn't understand why as he was ripping the DH. Not sure how fast we were riding, but I was barley touching the brake and not gaining any ground on him. After the CW DH we decided to take the old 69er in reverse. The first bit of the 69er we were riding pretty strong, but then we both kind of bonked. We slowed the pace down and took several brakes. We also stopped to play on a smaller drop with a really nice DH landing. I hit it 2 or 3 times and Trev must have hit it 4 or 5 himself. We continued to ride slow and take our time. We reached the log skinnies, and I cleaned the shorter one on my first try. That gave me a bit of a boost, and from there on we picked up the pace. Made it back to the cemetery twisties and rode that section in reverse. We both dug deep and hauled ass through there back to the cars.

All in all it was a really great ride, and I really enjoyed the pace. For most of the ride we would ride hard and then stop to session stuff for a bit. Then ride hard again. I still can’t believe that Trev started riding this year the way he handled the gnar today and was ripping the DH’s. Keep it up and you will be dusting us next year!

Back to the Douchbags
The guys we met on Jug-A-lug were older guys in their 50’s and explained that they had been riding the area the past couple of days for the first time doing some exploring. They asked me how to get back to the road and I gave them directions and even offered to show them. I also explained that they should stay clear of the trails across the street as they were really muddy and need more time to dry. The more experienced rider thanked me, and said he would steer clear of those trails. They turned down my offer to show them out to the road and Trev and I took off. We were way ahead of these guys and crossed over into the Sessions woods so I could hit the drop. They obviously didn’t know we were over there because about 5 minutes later they went into ride that side even after they said they would stay away. I know realize that they turned down my guide services because it was there plan to hit those trails and didn’t want me to see them. If they had been younger guys I would have still been annoyed, but I would have just chalked it up to young stupidity. I guess I just expected more from two older fellas.

It was an amazing afternoon weather wise, so wish I could have gotten out of work earlier and rode with you guys. Anyway sounds like you had a great ride! The track is very similar to what Trev and I rode last Sunday, gotta love Ye Ole 69'er in reverse!

Oh dude, remember the 69'r near the end, the pond on the left and the last short hard climb where you OTB/Crashed last week? well, I had that in my mind, the fact you said you where too far left on the little up and over that shot you into a crash.. so I figured I would stay a bit more to the right, being a bit more cautious. OMG.. there is a point where the big log/tree is broken and turns into that little up n over, I soo caught my foot in that as I was cruising over it.. OUCH! I fell, laughing hard.. tired.. but laughing like an ass..

Anyhow..

Tim's review is a pretty thorough one over all...

He hit those drops at Jug a Lug/Sessions like nothing... I think the warm ups where to help them look harder or something.. lol.. good stuff bub.

I had the jittery legs thing kicking for the warm up.. like I was nervous or something.. far from calm.. anyhow, that cleared up.. by the time we hit the cemetery.. thank goodness!

Overall I thought the cemetery through the CH downhill was great. The pace was good.. really good.. I keep trying to push myself faster through these trails.. it's hard to judge how fast/slow you are going when you solo ride them often. Hence my mentioning to Tim to pass me if I was too slow.. I don't want to slow the man down at all.. though I admit him behind me so close had me pushing myself a bit too.. I like that :)

We jammed through em.. probably some of the fastest riding I have had through that area.. almost non stop..

The end of the twisties, were the rocky turf is, I did pretty well. I've cleared it once totally clean.. and recently, say the last 2 or 3 rides, I've had the one or two quick foot down/up runs... this time, for god sakes, I made it through all the areas I consider tough and right at the very end of the rocky section there is a short uphill with a tree in the middle, root on the left.. and I kicked my foot out of the pedal via a rock or something.. miss-pedaled and fell over in slo-mo. I was more mad then anything because I want this clean run up to the FKC.. and I keep getting set back by small retarded shit.. lol..

FKC was good, I can make the climb itself but as many other guys, I hit that one area and foot down.. hard to explain but I am under the impression it's known to be the 'hard part' of the FKC. Ahh well, feet back in the pedals and away we go.

The tree that fell has an up/over rock set now -- near the firewall. I failed on round one, and hit it ok on round two.. too slow both times.. made it though! Still getting used to what I can/can't ride over/clear with the bike.

The ledge... what can I say.. I've wanted to session it during my last few rides there.. but everyone I ride with really do not show much interest in sessioning soo.. I just quietly ride out after a single attempt.. no big deal of course...

But, today we session it! and I think it did us both well... I made it on try 3 or 4... needless to say I was psyched!!

Now to put a couple things together for a CLEAN FKC bottom to top! .. I give it 4-6 more attempts for a fully clean bottom up, over the ledge, run. Hell, the ledge was a season goal of mine.. nice to have done it. Now to own it :)

The rest of the ride was great.. downhills n all.. some areas I am now clearing that I really had tough times with just last month.. the pace was good.. and again.. not riding here with people that often keeps me thinking of when I was chasing guys and trying to keep pace.. apparently I've picked up my pace a bit.. good stuffage!

69'r good stuff either way.. always like it.. course now it is so overgrown you cannot really see whats up ahead of you.. still a great ride but the overgrowth in some areas is intense!

Looking forward for another run in the near term Tim..
