I liked the old days at Killington, because they made skiing stretch on as long as they could, and that made my summer's that much shorter.

I bought stock in SKII because I beleived in their philosophy of making snow and skiing WHENEVER possible, not just whenever PROFITABLE.

I have skied 248 days of the year out of 365 at Killington

I positively hate ASC's management of Killington, for me it has lost 75% of it's soul.

My favorite mountain without fail is Sugarloaf.
Have you read the book about Killington?

Oh yes, I have had the book since it was published in 1990. I also have the book about Okemo and a bookshelf of other skiing publications.

If ASC wasn't in such poor financial shape :-?  we could all be skiing in a little over two months from now.

If there was any real competition to open early in New England, ASC would open up with Killington in October without a doubt.

I like how on the 1st pic the map shows Rams Head going all they way to the top. (Horn trail is shown)

Yeah...I remember that the lift now stops short of the top and that run. Why is that??? Another wonderful ASC idea?

Rams Head was beheaded (funny he he) as part of the Killington-Pico interconnect plans. There was supposed to be a lift going from Rams head to the valley location in between the two, and more lifts up to Pico.

Ahhhh...OK....so the plan is to put a lift to that summit area from the Valley Area, right? Honestly folks, will we ever see the interconnect? BTW...does anyone have a mock-up of that area and the proposed (and already cut  ) trails and lifts?

Rumor also has it that ASC did away with access to the summit of Rams Head because the top was too steep for family skiing??

That's just about as hair brained an idea as doing away with 75% os Sunrise Mountain

I only have a older trail map with some rough trail plans for what it was supposed to look like.

Yeah, now we let them 'ski-doos' run around Sunrise!

BTW...doesn't the loss of that area impact their VERTICAL DROP since you can't ski all the way to Bridgewater anymore?

Here is a scan of the 1989-1990 trail map with the view of the base of Sunrise at 1045' and the gondola at 1,160'. So Killington lost 115' of vertical drop by doing away with the bottom of Sunrise.

True vertical would be 3,081'

Killington correcting their vertical drop downward?! I wouldn't hold my breath.

I can remember that SB locals on RSN were questioning the summit elevation of Mt Ellen, which after ASC took over, somehow mysteriously increased 50 feet (as did the vertical drop). After some pressure and people citing topo maps, the new management fixed the number downwards.

There is also the matter of Killington Peak's true summit elevation. My Delorme Topo atlas has the peak at 4,235, while ASC and SKII trail maps have it at 4,241'

If it is 4,235', then Sugarloaf at 4,237' would be the higher :D 8)

Then Killington's true vertical would be 3,075'

Hehe.. Keep in Mind that Killington's gondi doesn't go all the way to the summit, although I suppose you can count the hike up to catwalk part of the ski area (still not all the way to the summit).

According to the County Highpointers group, Killington Peak (HP of Rutland County) is 4235'. They're pretty anal about getting things right, so I'd take that number as correct.

I see by your avatar that you have been to Mount Mitchell. My wife and I were there in October of 1996 to see the foliage. It's a really high peak, and we ascended above the clouds when we were there

We also went to Ski Beech, I think they have the highest town east of the Mississippi at 5,300'???

Hahahaha...must be part of the ASC strategy..."elevate" the mountains. Wonder if they sent a press release about that one?

AMERICAN SKIING COMPANY ADDS SIX FEET TO KILLINGTON PEAK

Amongst the many improvements made this summer to Killington, the Northeast's premier ski resort, the American Skiing Company has announced that they have just added six whole feet of elevation to the summit area.

"We feel that this additional six feet will allow skiers and riders even more rush than they might otherwise get," said Joe Smith, Mountain Manager.

The materials used for the 'elevation boost' was actually a stack of overdue bills and accounting data. Thus, the project has increased the size of the mountain while reducing costs...
