It sounds like they have a problem with burning bridges...I guess that's OK if there is a good supply of qualified people, but I'd think that it would be bad business practice in the long run.

That's what they're finding out. There is a definate revolving door at my present job and they are starting to look into why so many people are quitting. However, it doesn't appear to me that they're too serious yet. On a differnt note, just got my offer and employment pack.

Oh, and thanks everyone for the good advice, I will be giving two weeks notice.

I think an exception needs to be made if the company is in a niche market...sometimes you have to be willing to bring someone back because they are one of the few who have the specific qualifications and/or experience.

Granted.

I work with and train salespeople. Selling as a skill transcends the product sold. Good salespeople can sell...period. So it's less market specific.

My son recently gave two weeks notice and expected to be escorted out the door immediately (as he has seen done there before.

To his surprise, they counter-offered, gave him a few days to consider. He opted out, they let him stay on for the two weeks...plus I think. Yold jim he was welcome to come back if it didn't work out.

Like someone above already said.....it depends.

Good luck Andy!

Who ever came up with 2 weeks anyways? How long has this been common practice? Im sure in the 1940's people werent saying on the docks on NY make sure you give em your 2 weeks before taking that job in the city.. Im curoius to where this all came from.

It's normally a pay period, which for many people is every two weeks. I get paid monthly so I would give 4 if I were to leave.

Do you think they may counteroffer, Andy?

Don't know, we shall see. They couldn't pay me enough though so it doesn't matter. I did give two weeks notice this past Friday. I was not working Friday, went for a colonoscopy, but figured I'd me a nice guy and went in to give my notice. This way I figured I'd give them more time to plan the transition of my projects  . I think for the first time in my life, I can't wait for Monday :)
