having lived in the Philly area most of my life, I skied a fair amount of time in the Pocono area ... Elk was my favorite but Blue was where I went most because of the proximity to home and it's worthyness ... Camelback used to be good but it got too overcrowded ... BB and Frost offered zero challenge ... Montage (back then) was okay but weird set-up to access their short and steeper stuff ... once I discovered Hunter 20 years ago, I've never skied in PA again ... guess that's why I finally made it my home last year

Ed,

I'm about in the same spot as you were 20 years ago. Hunter isn't that much more drive time than Elk for me (3:15 vs 2:45). Getting up there (early am) is a piece of cake. But, I've always gotten beat up in NJ traffic coming home. I haven't yet mastered the best way to avoid that.

the key is to ski til last chair, savor the last run and take your time getting out of there ... grab a bite, chill out or whatever moves ya ... the later you get on the road the lighter the traffic ... my normal day tripin' routine was to leave Bucks County at 5am and the mountain around 5:30pm

Thanks. Looking forward to making a few runs with you there this year. With any luck the guns will be roaring there in less than 100 days.

The food in the top lodge(main lodge) is way better than in the bottom lodge...Phillycore got a bucket of greasy fries closing day for like $8 from the bottom cafeteria..

I actually like bottom lodge fries - fresh cut vs. batter at the top, i always steel a handful or two from the kids! the only other things i eat there are chile, and bacon eggand steeze (not to be confused with grilledsteeze!) sandwhich, a staple for the way home after a saturday morning session!

I think the grooming leaves a little to be desired but some days im amamazed at how good it is after rain and warm/freeze cycles and heavy skier traffic.

Sno mtn has better snow making and snow conditions than both elk and blue, but blue does have better lifts.
