Technically nothing in the poconos is a double black....

But.... if camelwack can consider cliffhanger a double than Blue sure as hell deserves the right to call Razors a double...

I'll probably get shot for this, but when you compare what it takes to ski a trail like Razors to a black diamond out west.. I'd say they are pretty comparable...
IMO it takes an equal amount of skill to get down a death cookied, icy bobsled trail like Razors as it does a much steeper black diamond out west with nice fresh soft snow.

Have you driven up to Blue and seen the new snowguns and lights on the new run???? It's opening this season...Not all weekends at Blue are a zoo. Early and late season isn't bad and anyday with a chance of showers is pretty dead...Last season I only waited in line for more than 5 minutes a few times..

That's cool! Glad to hear that about the new trail. I haven't been up there in a while. Maybe I'll take a ride sometime later this month or September and then head to Jim Thorpe for some biking. Blue is about 100 miles for me one way. Their website is terrible for updating on what's going on in the offseason.
My problem on weekends isn't so much that I'm waiting in line long, but the amount of people on the trails. We'll check them out this season. Didn't go up this past season. Still, can't beat midweek. We like to park at the bottom and you practically have the place to yourself...

That is kinda true in a way. I always say that it's not so much the steepness that bothers me about a trail, but the condition. A steep powdery black out West is easier and a lot more fun than an icy blue run with death cookies.

The bottom is the steezy place to park and starting at 7:30AM on a weekend..not a minute later is the only way to do it..8 runs the first hour..7 runs the second hour..and the maybe 5-6 more runs before the crowds descend and then off to the Blue mountain drive inn for an ham and steeze omelatte and some fresh sausage..

Sounds like a plan!

I actually liked it when they just had the little shack at the bottom before they made it a lot bigger. Coming from my direction, most people would just turn in the main entrance not realizing the lower parking lot was there a 1/2 mile ahead down the hill...

Actually Razors' double black diamond rating is a bit overkill even for this area IMO. I think Main Street / Barneys is about the same in difficulty (Barneys harder due to the bumps) and they're a single diamond.

Looking at google earth for a second, I think Razors is about the same pitch as Skyeburst at Killington. Nonetheless, it's still a deserved rating, considering how much easier everything else there is.

Maybe some of the stuff off the map on East Mt. at JF when there's enough snow and White Lightening at Sno...Can't think of anything else.

Phillycore has watched me ski the marquee route at Blue..including the lower marquee route under the hell yeah section near Lower Sidewinder..some of that is at least double blue square..steezy...nothing like making jump turns in Pennsyltucky..

Didn't have much to do tonight, so I decided to try to figure out how steep they really are.

Some numbers for everyone, (give or take a degree):

Steepest 500' of White Lightening @ Sno: 26 degrees.
Steepest 500' of Challenge @ Blue: 23.4 degrees.

(From old thread) Steepest 500' of Lower Ovation @ Killington: 30.7 degrees.

Thanks for taking the time to put together those stats..

Is that the area where you veer right off of sidewinder and there's a sort of cliff section that drops you onto lower sidewinder? I always thought that would be fun if there was enough snow...Sidewinder itself is a great free skiing trail. They should move the terrin park elsewhere. Switchback is my favorite at Blue though.

Interesting...Thanks. I like the sign warning skiers before entering white lightning. :daffy:

Where you cut over from Lazy Mile to the Falls..you go between the bushes to the skiers left of the 6-pack..some nice steep turns..you need about 8-10 inches of thick snow..I've skied the entire cut right underneath the 6-pack from the top of Challenge to Homestretch and it was sweet...lots of patrollers yelling at me from above...Word on PASR is that only the lower section of the new trail is going to open this season as lighting and snowmaking are only installed on the lower half..we'll see. Early in the morning..Sidewinder is a great high speed cruiser..Switchback is very good..don't tell anybody about it..They used to host a Downhill on Switchback..I'll find the youtube footage..

LOL..whatever...I was already put in the database two seasons ago for fast skiing on Paradise. Me and my buddy..AtomicSkier from PASR were hauling ass down Paradise. We were whistled at to stop..we stopped and then while the patroller..Mark Miller was giving his spiel..I said...blah blah blah..and we skied off but unfortunately there was a liftline and we got busted...I thought we would get booted out but we just got put in the database. The patrollers at Blue are pretty queer. If you ski in the woods..8 feet from the trail..you'll get yelled at..but according to Mark Miller..I can ski so fast my hair burns on fire..as long as it's not on a slow skiing trail..The patrollers at Blue are mostly working on their Pocono shuffle and on Thursday nights it's circle jerks and corona lights in the top shack..

Yeah thats also how it goes at the ski hills in western pa and ny...one night a couple years back some little snowboard kids went down a closed hill... a "saftey patroller" sees them in there so the kids stop and refuse to come out...after a while the gaper saftey patroller started screaming "DONT MAKE ME TAKE MY BOOTS AND GET YOU MYSELF!!!'" the guy was going crazy...

anyways i guess you give blue mountain too much free advertising for them to ban you...

Steeze...You should come up to Frost this season. I've skied right behind patrollers well off the trail and I'm sure they've seen me plenty of times from the East Mt. lift and never said a word. The only time I was ever reprimanded (sp?) was when a Patroller thought I was about to duck a rope to get onto Solitude. I told him that I was just thinking about hitting the Mad Tree Glade (adjacent to it) which was pretty thin and he was like oh you can go in there but I wouldn't.
