Blue doesn't have a triple black...their two doubles would be Blues at Jackson Hole..but are good for mad steezy speed..Blue has a solid pitch for the first 900 vert and then the rest is runout..

i was talking about denton which has a gladed trail named extreme rated "triple" black. i think the only other "triple" black in the east is at smuggs. i've never seen a "triple" out west.

I think my targets for that joke will understand the humor... :)

Extreme glade skiing... ok...

not a big fan of officially marking glades - i like the mystique of the local names...

Considering how balmy the past 2 seasons have been, 50-60 degree days in January and lotsa rain, The Pokey ski hills do a great job trying to keep snow on the slopes. Elk is as close to NE skiing we've got, imo.

I learned to ski at Roundtop many eons ago, they do have a couple steep runs there. I haven't been there in years but from what I've heard it hasn't changed much. 'Gunbarrel" is steep, albeit short..

Back in the 70's they rarely groomed their main blue crusier 'Minuteman" and it used to build some huge moguls. Actually they used to let the bumps build on almost everything to some degree except the green stuff.

Blue Knob had some really good terrain too, I think they still have the same double chairs they had years ago. It always skied quite a bit bigger than almost any other PA area.. and if I recall, had a wicked nasty access road when the snow fell, It also held snow better at 3100 Ft..

Then when it's 60 degrees out and rains for 3 days straight..Blue still has all their terrain open while other PA/NJ resorts suffer. Nice fluffy Chalky McPowder is great but the high water content McSludge lasts against the sun, rain, warmth and fog that MASH Mid Atlantic Ski Hell experiences. Blue wouldn't get 2-300,000 skier visits per year if not for their powerful snowmaking system. Their TV commercials and radio ads are top notch. Plus the marquee route under the 6-pack can be skied with as little as 5-8 inches of Poke-N-Hoes powder..When we get the Blizzard of 2009 I'll be glad to have 110mm underfoot to float above all the beer cans, 40 ounce Colt 45 bottles and rental poles.

As long as I'm a skier..Blue is gonna get thousands of free advertising from me...come on Barbara owner of Blue mountain and daughter of Blue Mountains founder..The late Ray Tuthill. In his late 50s..Ray Tuthill wanted to build a ski resort on the north side of the Appalachian trail in southeastern Carbon county. People thought he was crazy but as a builder..he put his employees to work in slow times to build a ski area. They opened with a T-bar and double chair but as time passed..more lifts were installed and more runs cut. Long flowing runs like Lazy Mile and Switchback..straight down the fall line runs like Main Street and the Chute..and of course Burma road..4500 feet of twists and turns..yes it's a green trail but the tight corners can cause pileups..It's a slow skiing trail so watch for the Redcoats..an elite squad of Snow Sports Patrollers and Rescuers..on the lookout for Skiers Responsibility code violaters. Reno 911 without the short shorts..armed with whistles.

yes whistles

Burma road was named due to Rays time spent in Burma during WW II, I always thought Tuts Lane was named after king Tut.

For this free advertising I appreciate a free all days season pass...along with an order of either Pierogies or Fried Oreos from the lower lodge cafeteria..plus I'd like to start my own unit of Rangers to go after the most high profile skiers responsibility code...We will dress like gapers to fit in and then pounce on violators..no clipping tickets..violators will be tackled shackled..and ejected..and put into the database..Oh and I'd like to hire an IT guy to manage the database...O.K. and I have a rap as well for the theme song..

Sung to the tune of Snoop Doggs Gin and Juice..

With so much drama at Blue Mountain Ski
It's kind of hard to pick out a steezy fleece
But some how some way I keep rocking the green Northface like every single day
Got pockets for my skeeze pockets for my grilledSteeze
Fanny pack for my keys

May I kick a little something for the ski check
In the lodge for a break after a yardsale wreck
No need for a lock you can buy ski socks
At the skiers store on the ground floor
Get hard to the core

Buy a hat with a logo
Hit the jumps higher than a kid on a pogo
stick..then hit up the bar and watch ski flicks
Or tailgate in the lot with Rodney and his crew..
Blue mountain is hella sick I'm not talking bout the flu

You're insane. But I do admire the enthusiasm. I feel as passionately about my local haunt.

X2...Keep banging the drum GSS. Remind me to introduce you to my buddy Max_501, he has the same warped misdirection as you except towards PMTS.

There are other areas here besides Blue and Denton which, oddly enough, seem to get the most press around here (for better or for worse). But, and this may come as a shock, there is actually some decent skiing to be had here...though few and far between it can be had (Elk, Sno, Frost and yes Blue) . Plus I'll definitely take having 6 areas with a 30 minute drive from home.

I've been to Elk...I thought it was a decent little mountain.

I could ski there if it was close to home.

When did a hill with barely 1000 feet of vertical start being classified as a mountain?

When that's still the most vertical drop at any mountain in the state.

My opinions below:

Blue Mountain:

The good:

-Ability to make a lot of snow.
-Two HS lifts out of the base.
-Closest decent area to me.
-Nice layout.
-Relatively interesting trails, good for skiing fast.

The bad:

-Last year, they got rid of their afternoon grooming, which made skiing at night into more of a downhill ice skating session.
-Still haven't opened the new trail(s)
-Gets packed on the weekend.

Sno Mountain (formerly montage):

The good:

-Actually has relatively steep trails.
-They let Boomer and White Lightening bump up a lot.
-Blew a ton of snow last season, and the SMI Polecats everywhere churn out a lot, very quickly.
-Uncrowded...did not ever hit a liftline, even on peak weekends.
-Nice "terrain pods", the beginners really stay away from the lower difficult area.

The bad:

-The lifts are horrible, the expert quad is okay, but the rest will have you contemplating jumping off.
-Odd layout, it'll take some getting used to.
-Intermediate area trails are far too wide, and as a result, the trails get turned into courderoy ice by the wind.

Blue on a weekend is very crowded like most Pocono places. Camelback is far worse because of all the slopeside lodging. Adding the new high speed lift just increases the traffic on the trails. If you get out at 7:30 you might have 1 1/2 hours of decent riding before all hell breaks loose. On a weekday it's a pretty decent place. They blow a ton of snow in a very short amount of time. Razor's Edge is my favorite trail which has computerized snowmaking and I also like Lazy Mile which is a nice fairly long cruiser. It would be nice if they opened the new trail finally this season, but it doesn't look like they will. We'll see. Elk is my favorite place in PA because of the terrain, but it's just such a longggg drive. If I'm gonna drive there I might as well go to the Catskills. Elk needs some serious upgrading to snowmaking and lifts too. You're not gonna find much in PA to rival VT though. Razor's Edge at Blue is a double black in PA, but wouldn't come close to a black in VT!

Have you driven up to Blue and seen the new snowguns and lights on the new run???? It's opening this season...Not all weekends at Blue are a zoo. Early and late season isn't bad and anyday with a chance of showers is pretty dead...Last season I only waited in line for more than 5 minutes a few times..

Actually Razors' double black diamond rating is a bit overkill even for this area IMO. I think Main Street / Barneys is about the same in difficulty (Barneys harder due to the bumps) and they're a single diamond. Alot of Blue's trail ratings are off it seems.

The good thing about Razors being a double Black is that it keeps some of the nubs off of it. Switchback is rated a Blue and I get mad steezy speed on that run..wow that's a fun run..Paradise is a green and due to the length..I get tons of speed on that..enough for the redcoats to whistle and sometimes chase me..lol

I think resorts rate their slopes relative to other slopes in the region and relative to the slopes they have. There's nothing at Bear Creek that rates a black diamond, imo, but relative to the hill, or lack thereof, the hardest/steepest slope there is made a diamond.
