Resort:Pico Peak
Date Skied: 3/18/06 - 9am to 2:30pm
Conditions: cloudy, windy summit, about 15 degrees
Trip Report:
This weekend’s trip started at Pico and ended at Jiminy Peak. Pico had 7 inches of fresh snow & 15 trails open according to their website. The first runs were down from the Golden Express. Basically intermediates with a good pitch.
After the warm up runs, off to the Summit Express quad. From the trip up the lift, it looks like the rain and warm temps since my last visit did some serious damage to all of the fun trails on the left side of the lift such as the lower KA, Lower Sunset 71, Sunset Schuss and also the Birch Glades on the right side.
From the summit, Upper KA and 49er were the options down. There was a lot of boilerplate on both trails. It was either choosing the narrow trail (KA) or wider trail (49er) with boiler plate. There were areas that had packed granular snow and everything was good and all of a sudden you hit a patch of the ice. After a few runs down, you knew what parts of the trails to avoid. I just saw on Pico's site that they are now closed for the season.
This time I brought my camera, but there was a lot of clouds and snow squalls in the mountains. Here are some pictures:
Looking at the summit from the Golden Express Quad:
Looking up the summit from the Lower Pike trail:
The 49er trail. Notice the fresh snow in the trees.
Another shot of the upper part of 49er:
I think this is the entrance for the Summit Glades:
No matter how you try to cover it, it still loves to shine:
Killington from the top of Pico:
Riding the Summit Express Quad. Notice the crowds in front!. The trail is Upper Pike:
