Here's the crux of the whole issue. In this post, Doug has provided a thought-out counter-point to pro-helmet posts. While I, and I'm sure others will disagree, that's all well and good, at least he provides a rational reason for his choice. I don't think anyone can dispute the fact that the things most likely to keep you from injury are skills and awareness, that is an absolute "no-brainer." And he's correct, a helmet is another means of protection, like a release binding, et al... Its a means of protection, that I and many others choose to use, and in doing so, encourage others to use as well. I don't think anyone is attempting to "force" others to do so, as has been implied. But I respect Doug's choice, and his counter-point. He backs-up his position, and doesn't just resort to calling it dumb.

As a sidenote... I do wear a helmet..
But only cause all the cool kids do... :)

My choice is freedom of choice... :flag:

You gotta admit a slick helmet with cool stickers looks way more rad than some pom-pom hat... ;)

I think you missed the point of my posts. The purpose wasn't to debate the merits of helmets, and how they work in some situations but not in others, the point was to blast people who think that they're better than everyone because they wear a helmet. I saw the title of the thread, knew that it would be the generic helmet thread, and made my post SPECIFICALLY to raise eyebrows and rile folks up.

I think I've mentioned before, I don't care if you people wear helmets or not. I'm just sick of people getting this high and mighty attitude about it. My point about the Prius must have struck some chord because it elicited a strong response from people. You don't have to use "drive a toyota prius" you can substitue any elitist snob remark you want ("don't eat trans fats", "don't drink alcohol", "run 3 miles a day").

My point of getting into this conversation was that people should get off their high horses every once in a while. Everyone (including me) could use to be taken down a peg.

And with that, I'm done with this thread.

P.S. The response of the general AZ crowd would have been much different if this thread had been titled "Please, please, Don't Drink ALCOHOL! Any Alcohol", and one of the posts read:

"You know what? I am feeling old and grumpy right now and I am going to take it out on you .. You are tired reading these kind of posts? .. Guess what? I am tired of reading your kind of response. Did anyone single you out specifically? Nobody knew if you drank alcohol or not until you added your 2 cents. Nobody was talking down to you specially but I will .. your stupid if you drink alcohol. How's that? But that's just my opinion. dmc pushes it sometimes but at least he knows when he has made his point. You on the other hand don't seem to have that ability yet. If we were having a nice cold pepsi together this is what I would say to your face but you wouldn't want to have a nice cold pepsi with me. Oh not that I mean anything bad personally about you by this post. I don't really care if you wear a helmet or not. Ok end of rant .. old man going to bed now."

Oh, and OldSnowboarderinME, I would like to have a beer with you sometime. I might be in Sugarloaf for Reggae Festival if you're in.

I'm really not an argumentative guy in person . . . for some reason I just like to mix it up on the internets.

your stupid if you don't wear a helmet.

I'm sorry, but this has to be the stupidest thing I have ever heard. This has to be like the 10th time somebody has said something like that in this thread. How is does it make it stupid? Everything in life and skiing involves some risk. What is next? Skiing fast and skiing glades makes you stupid. My bet is cranking fast GS turns down a trail is a lot more dangerous than not wearing a helmet. If you think the reward of not wearing a helmet is worth the risk that is fine. Every part of skiing pretty much involves taking a risk to be rewarded.

(I'm not really attacking you OldsnowboarderME, and you probably didn't even truly mean that, but I just wanted to get that off my chest)

BTW, I do wear a helmet.

Here are my two stories, decide for yourself to buy a helmet:

Skiing at Sunday River Maine in the early 90's, my girl friend went off the side of a trail and slide down an embankent. She hit her head on a tree. I went down to her and she was unconscious. When she came to her right ear was bleeding. Ski patrol got her down and after head exrays, she was diagnosed with a fractured skull. No one wore helmets in those days.

I buy skiies at a shop in NJ called D&Q. One of the owners named Quiggly strongly recommends buying a helmut. I asked him one day why he so strongly recommends it. Well, he didn't wear a helmet and now he is an epileptic due to a head injury he suffered during a ski accident. He takes medicine every day to pevent seizures.

I bought a helmet after that.

I own a helmet and I would say I wear it 90% of the time I am free skiing.

I try to wear it during lessons to set a good example, but sometimes in a beginner lesson, it is just too cold to wear a helmet while I'm standing still. You know, double hat plus hood days. But on those days, I'll carry it with me to show that I own one.

Always wear it in the woods, weekends, crowded days or at any mountain with a high percentage of morons. (killington, mt snow, hunter, you get the idea)

Only time i really wont wear it no matter what is on uber nice spring days when I want to feel the cool wind in my hair, but in general I am calm and reserved on those days.

While not wearing a helmet is your choice, I feel that people who don't at least own one needs to get checked out by a psydoc.

My reason is I was at windham on a nice day where I typically wouldnt wear a helmet. I noticed that there was a large pack of morons jumping the snow guns recklessly. Gut instinct said that I should go put on my snow condom (I claim right to that phrase....snow condom, I like it). Anyway, stop in the lodge, grab a drink and pop on the rubber (claim that one too). Next run bang, I got whacked in the head by a snowboard. His edge tore a gap out of my carbon fiber helmet.

If I did not already own one, I never would have thought of spending $$$. So next time you see them on sale, do your self a favor, its like putting your seatbelt on in a snowstorm. (i dont generally wear a belt, but I do when I feel there is high potential for another idiot to hit me)

No.. it would be the stupidest thing you ever read  Anything you do that gets you hurt or worst yet, dead.. pretty much most of the time falls in the category of being stupid. stupid is as stupid does .. anytime I have hurt myself, the first thought that came into mind was stupid or dumb a$$.. I have never said a helmet will always be there for you no matter what your doing. Some times it will save you .. some times not.
No offense taken and I never felt you was attacking me personally .. it is your opinion and this a forum where opinions are expressed. Just taking risk is not the same as taking a controlled calculated risk. He was just stirring the pot and I was calling him on it. You know that would make an excellent thread .." Your Stupid if you ..." do or don't list .. Nah if probably get locked in short order ..maybe at Epic..

You obviously don't understand how internet forums work, do you?

Your response should have read something like this:

"Listen you idiot punk kid it is stupid not to wear a helmet, any idiot can put a helmet on, plus they are comfortable. It is just like wearing a seatbelt, you have to be an idiot not to. Your opinions suck or so do your grammatical skills.

PS: no offense or anything"

At work one day I forgot to say, "not that I mean anything bad by that.." and I got into trouble. Oh I am becoming wise in the ways of the forum ... When you get older, after all I was born during the Trueman administration, you find that blatant verbal attacks just don't have the same thrill anymore like it does for the kids. now if I could only find out who "frostbite boy" is .... I seem to remember Marc writing some thing about him.. any ideas? ;-)

That may have occurred. It may have been in a parallel universe, however, so let's keep it just between you and me, since you have cleared mastered the transporting skills necessary to move between several alternate dimensions.

And I've gotten down to just four or five different people floating around up in my noggin now. Unfortunately two of them are raging alcoholics and a the one I'm pretty sure is either a schizo or a hillbilly. Possibly both.

What have I been doing.....................

SB did collect 14" from Friday on, so I was finding my way through a bit of that fresh. Once the season hits, I spend less time on the boards as I am skiing.

Since I said earlier I would hook with the WF crew later this winter, my plan is the backcountry fest. Hopefully, I can get there on Friday afternoon to enjoy both Sat and Sun skiing, but that depends on work, as I will be coming back from 10 days in La Grave on Feb 28, so I will be behind at work and jet lagged. I will be at the dinner, slide show for sure on Sat night. I will bring a set of touring skis with me so you can tour on the Sun. I will bring beacon, probe, shovel etc for you as well. I think I recall you use a 26.0 boot or so, so although the freeride is very adjustable, you should have no problem as I wear a 26.0 as well. Primary issue is this: ski size--> is a 185 a bit big. If so, I can bring a 170 cm ski. Both have 90 mm waists.

After the fest (March 3/4), I am off to Nelson BC for a day at Whitewater, a couple days at White Grizzley powder cats and then a day at Valhalla powder cats. After that it will be 4 - 6 weeks of regular weekend skiing either at SB, presidentials, or adks depending on snow.
