This is a continuation of the previously abandoned attempt to summit Pocumtuck Mountain (Berkshires, Colrain, Mass.) Second time was a charm. What should have been a one and a half hour one way excursion ended up taking the entire day. I spent nearly 4 1/2 hours losing, finding, losing the trail, flagging, moving brush and cutting branches to get to the summit. Trail location took a compass, altimeter on GPS, topos and moderate bushwhacking when I became lost, which happened a few times. It was a great day to hone my navigation skills. Without flagging this trail would be lost a couple years.

Happy with my flagging results, this sets the stage for work trips later this summer. While downfall from the Catamount Hill Road to the first unnamed summit was difficult, it paled compared to the second leg, 1.5 miles to Catamount. Trees were encountered across the trail about once every minute of hiking. The summit proper experienced far less damage than down below, perhaps due to natural pruning.

The view from Pocumtuck is simply gorgeous. Expansive westerly view of the Berkshires on a warm Summer day provided a nice respite.

I would now suggest that with flagging Jeremy's navigation moves from "difficult" to "moderate".

Attached below are my pictures from the day. Stay tuned for announcements of work trips.

Wow! The ice storm damage is worse than I thought up there. I haven't hiked up there since I dragged my wife up there two years ago. I hiked Massamet in Feb and there was little damage. Amazing what a few hundred feet did for that storm.

""Fallen Timber" is one of the worst obstacles in this mode of traveling. It is due to fires and strong winds, and leaves the ground encumbered with piles of tree-trunks and bristling with spiky boughs. The Editor has struggled without stopping for over two hours to cross a belt of fallen timber less than 1/2 M(ile) wide. "
Moses Foster Sweetser, "The White Mountains: A Handbook for Travelers", 1881

Nothing more true I have learned in the past month.....
